hi, i am having a problem starting my pc i power it up then after a couple of
seconds it comes up a black screen with the messege below :

"windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt

\windows\system32\config\system

you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set-up using the
original set-up cd-rom
select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

i cant find my set-up cd-rom is there anywhere i can d/l it from or anything
else i can do to fix it without rebooting i dont want to loose what i have on
my computer.

Thanks for all your help.

This is a pretty straightforward problem that can be fixed via the
directions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

This refers to using the Setup CD to get into the Recovery Console. But in
fact, you can use any bootable XP CD, you can borrow one, to do this.
You can also use a Linux boot disk or move the disk to another system to
perform the file manipulations, adjusting the directions accordingly.

Different systems offer different recovery options. You will have to try it
to know. You would probably get a chance to bail out before destroying all
data, if that is your only recovery option.
