Booting Issues

I have just re-installed XP on a client machine. P3 1gig.
user bought a new 40 gig maxtor drive so i install windows
xp. Having to boot from a 98 bootdisk and running
smartdrv, the install takes forever. Then when the install
is complete the computer, it just sits at the Windows XP
progress screen for about 20 min before getting to the
loggon on screen. Anyone have any ides?

Thanks

P.S I tried on another drive and it does the same thing

I don't understand why you had to boot from a Win98 disk and run
smartdrv. The Windows XP cd is bootable. Just boot from it (change the
boot order in the BIOS if you need to) and install where you want. If
this is a clean install of XP, delete current partition(s) and create
new one(s), format and install. If you are using an Upgrade version, XP
will ask for qualifying media early on - just put in a disk for an
earlier os.

The bios does not give me a option to boot from cd or I
would have done that.
Well, since you didn't say that in your first post, I couldn't have
guessed. Are you sure your client's computer has hardware that is
compatible with XP? Most modern computers can boot from the cd drive.
If you have run the Upgrade Advisor and feel the machine can handle XP,
perhaps you could do a network install.
