Boot up Problem

When i start my System, XP home (sp2), i get all the way to my desktop and
then it locks up. Most of my desktop icons are only visible as basic icons
and do not display properly. My bottom toolbar appears to be stuck trying to
load an application and is in a constant state of loading. I can still open
desktop icons but not anything from the taskbar. Have tried all the usual
stuff but i am reduced to pulling my hair out!!!
Anyone suggest a possible reason for this or a possible fix? (I have tried a
system restore without success)

Boot into Safe Mode and verify whatever may be in your startup folder. (Run
msconfig)
