Boot to DOS??????

Xeno Chauvin

Have the following instructions trying to update
firmware for CD-ROM drive.
"Please close Windows system and reboot by Dos mode"
So, I press F8 after post find a list of "stuff" but no
"pure" Dos mode? Best I get is "Safe mode Command prompt"
When I get there it tells me I'm an administrator but won't let me
get to C: where my upgrade program is. I'm in some directory
but NOT plain ol' "C:".
O.K. maybe I've forgotten my Dos commands?
I tried "cd\C:" and plain C:
How do I get to a Dos "C" prompt?
Thanks

Go to www.bootdisk.com and download the Windows 98 Bootdisk. Put your
BIOS file on the floppy after it has written. Reboot and let it boot off
the floppy. Then you should be able to flash your BIOS from the floppy
which will give you a pure DOS mode.

There is no pure DOS mode in XP. Your only option would be to boot from
a DOS floppy disk and run the upgrade program from a DOS floppy.

Hi, Nathan.

Since Xeno has WinXP, he can just right-click on Drive A: in My Computer,
with a blank or expendable diskette in the drive. The click Properties |
Format. On the next screen, choose Create an MS-DOS startup disk.

This diskette can be used to flash the mainboard BIOS, as you said. But
Xeno needs to update the firmware on the CD-ROM drive. Instructions for
that may be different than for the mainboard. As I recall, my latest CD
drive firmware update was from inside WinXP; Xeno's drive must be a
different make and model.

Thanks for the tip on the Boot Disk. I've always used that website
because I thought for some reason that creating a boot disk from within
Windows would make me do the whole 6 floppies for WinXP Boot Disks.

I have an OptoRite DD0203 DVD Burner that requires flashing be done in a
DOS and cannot be done from within Windows. There should be
instructions that come with the flashing utility as to how to flash it.
You will need 3 things: 1. New BIOS file, 2. Flashing Utility, and 3.
The bootdisk.

Just make sure to print out the instructions and then reboot and follow
them. It's actually very simple thought it seems like it is difficulty.

The instructions are in Cyber-chenglish. ( Taiwanese dialect.)
The line I quoted is 25% of ALL the instructions. ( Being only 4 lines of
instructions,)

What drive/make/model is it? Maybe there are English instructions online?

MSI , got the firmware and instructions from their site.
Just tried booting with "Dos" disk; still can't get to "C".
Will try the idea of adding the Update program to the boot disk
and run from there.
