boot/start up time..too long

Hello NG,
For a couple of days now, my boot and start-up time have been taking ages.
First I get a "Pentiun4" logo for a couple minutes, then a blank screen,
then Winxp starts, then blank screen again...an finally all is
loaded...about 10 mins !
I don't recall installing anything new that could have led to this.
PC bought at a big mediastore (Mediamarkt for those of you who know it).
Helpdesk is out-of-the-question...and don't really want to bring the pc to
them and wait a week or more before I get it back !

I use xp-home (SP2), 3.06 ghz, 512 memory.

Could this be a BIOS probelm? (I wonder considering the long time the
"Pentium4" logo stays on.

Thatks for your help.

Start>Run>type MSCONFIG>click OK
Click Startup tab then uncheck/disable everything except your
anti-virus program, if Norton, it will start with NAV
Click Apply and Close > reboot
Note: Disabling will not delete anything, it will stop most of your
applications
from loading at startup using valuable system resources. Icons will work.
:~)

Since you asked in a Windows XP group, you got a Windows-
centric answer. If that doesn't help and you feel the
BIOS is to blame, then you should look there as well.

Thanks Byte for the info.
Could you pls tell me shortly why I need to take this step in windows,
whilst the start-up "problem" is before windows starts? (I thought it was at
the boot sector..) (why would setings in winxp leave the "pentium4" hanging
for some time at start-up?..)
I am no profesional as you in this matter..but like to learn.

I do apreciate the responses, but pls do not blame me on writting to the
wrong NG. I was simply requesting more info.
Priority 1 is to get my pc running smooth again..
But as I said, I am no prof as you guys are.....and to me such an answer
sounds as "Just spring from the clif, all is allright !"
my apologies for my ignorance.

This sounds like it is hardware related. Check with the hard drive
manufacturer for diagnostic utilities to run from floppy. Also if you have
multiple sticks of memory, remove one and see if the boot time changes.
Repeat this with each memory module. Do you have any USB devices? If so
remove the ones unnecessary for minimal functionality and add them back one
at a time.
Make sure any CD disk is removed from your CD drive/s.
Please post back with your results.
