BOOT SECTOR VIRUS!!

J

JM

hello,
my friend was running Xp home with norton av .
he downloaded a picture from the net and got a very nasty boot virus .. his
machine would not shut down (because that would activate the virus) so he
turned it off manually his machine would not work correctly after reboot
so we zero'd the drive with maxblast .
his bios has boot virus protection enabled so we reinstalled the drive and
tried to reload xp but the screen says" write virus in boot sector ".
I have zero'd the drive 2 times and still it shows a write virus in the boot
sector.. is there any other way to erase this drive and KILL this Boot
Virus
PS i tries another drive and had no problem ..so there is definately
something on the drive
KILL DISK just sits there and won't move
any ideas since im running out of them

Try DBAN,

dban.sourceforge.net.

There is a SMALL chance that the virus managed to corrupt the CMOS
itself.
In which case, Download the latest BIOS and Upgrade. Try DBAN first.

Another thing I forgot to mention, is you may be running afoul of the
Boot Sector Virus Protection in BIOS, rather that fighting an actual
virus. Try going into the BIOS, and disabling it.

This is not an XP OS issue. Why not post to one of the virus or hardware
newsgroups?
Microsoft.public.security.virus
alt.comp.virus
alt.comp.anti-virus

Its normal, with the bios AV boot write detection enabled, during any
windows installation, to get a bios message indicating attempted
modification/write of the MBR. Due to this behaviour, MS indicates to
disable this bios setting when installing windows, any version.

If you have decent AV installed, it should alert you when such an occurence
is attempted and freezes that condition before it actually occurs. So,
disabling the bios AV boot write detection is suggested under those
conditions.

Once the drive has been zeroed out, no data exists on the hard drive. The
only exception is if the boot virus exists on the floppy or CD boot media
used to zero out the drive. Then, its transferred to the hard drive unseen.
