Boot Screen Missing

D

Don Pomeroy

I originally posted this in the general newsgroup and have gotten no
answers. Maybe someone here can help.

I've recently installed Win2K Pro with SP-4 slipstreamed into the install
CD.

On this particular system there is no 'Boot Screen' displayed. The screen
I'm missing is the initial black and white text screen that says 'Press
F8......... and has a progress bar at the bottom.

The system seems to go right into the multi color startup screen with the
blue progress bar.

If I edit BOOT.INI to cause a multi boot display it displays the expected
screen with the delay specified in BOOT.INI.

Of three systems shared through a KVM switch this is the only one that has
this quirk. While the systems are somewhat different in terms of
Motherboard, Drives, and Periphals, they all have the same video card,
Nivdia GeForce2 MX400-64 MB.

Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this?

Thanks in advance.

Don,

Do you have more than one operating system on this machine you are trying to
boot? You should only get the "menu" if you have more than one operating
system...otherwise, it skips the menu and boots.

Thx,
Nico

What happens if you change the "timeout" period to a longer period of time?
Does that cause the menu to pop up?

Nico,
Thanks for the prompt response.
I ran some tests exploring your idea.
Changing the timeout value, I tried both 5 and 45 as test values, only
affects the timeout when a multiboot menu screen is used.
With no multiboot the screen simply goes black for about 5 seconds after
initial start and then you see the normal color startup screen with the blue
progress bar.
On other systems a B/W screen, non graphic, with a white progress bar is
displayed during the middle three seconds of the five second period. This is
what's missing.

Thanks for the additonal information Don.

It appears your problem is similiar to that listed in the following KB
article (though you may not have installed NT4).
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;249000
However it does explain how to replace your ntldr and ntdetect.com files.
It sounds as if they are bad. Would you mind trying this?

Thx,
Nico

Nico,

Absolutely not. It'll take me some time tomorrow though to get everything
organized.
I'll get back to you with results of testing probably early afternoon. I'm
EDST here, UTC -4hrs. 9:40PM here now so I'm going to call it a night. Been
here since 7 this morning.
Storms are driving me crazy. Switched to UPS 6 times since noon. Most of
it's gone by now though.

Nico,
I've tried NTLDR & NTDETECT files from.
1-The original W2K CD.
2-A W2K CD at SP-2
3-A W2KCD at SP-3
4-A W2K CD at SP-4
5 -Files copied from a working system.

All to no avail. Any more ideas.

Has anyone seen this behavior before?
The only thing unique to this system is that it's the only one that uses an
ASUS A7V266-E motherboard. Although I can't see what the MB would be doing.
It performs as expected with anything else.

Thanks for your interest. I'd really like to solve this.

Sorry for the delay Don.

I am checking with the Setup team on our side of things to see if we can
come up with a resolution for your issue. Please bare with me on this.

Thanks for you patience.

Most following press than
I too have this problem, or rather my neighbour does. I cannot boot to safe
mode because i get a black and blank screen until the windows/blue screen
starts to appeaar. Also, the task bar and start button are missing and
nothing I have tried gets them back (ctrl+alt), finding it hidden at the
edge of the screen etc.

I had no replies from several groups and am really mystified for all this.
Hoping to get some enlightenment here.
