Boot Process with Unattended Install

T

tsgman01

we are trying to automate the install of XP Pro. We are
currently running NT 4 and want to automate the process,
the process should format the hard drive and install XP
Pro and then install custom apps... We have run setup
manager and created the unattend.txt file.. We would
like to run the install NOT using RIS... 1. Is there
anyway to create a bootable win XP CD?? or how can I boot
the PC (DO NOT WANT TO USE 6 yes 6 floppy disks) and run
the setup process using the unattend.txt file... 2. We
do not have the budget to purchase a third party ghosting
software... I do have a network boot disk but it will
only run the winnt.exe (16-bit) version of setup and the
hard drives are larger than 4GB and this version of the
boot disk will not see the NTFS drive... Thanks for your
assistance...

Read the files in the support.cab and deploy.cab files in
the \support directory of the XP CD. There are
deployment tools that can help you with this that are
available.

Hi

Thank you for your posting.

As you indicated, you have created the unattend.txt file adn would like to
run the install not using RIS. You want to create a bootable win XP CD and
boot the PC not with 6 floppy disks and run the setup process using the
unattend.txt file.

To create a bootable Win XP CD and run Unattended Installation, please
refer to this knowledge base article:

314459 How to Perform an Unattended Installation of Windows from a CD-ROM
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314459

Please let me know if the information and suggestion helps and answers your
question. If anything is unclear, please let me know.

Hi tsgman0,

There are 3 kind of deploy methods:

1. Windows Unattended Setup
2. Sysprep Installation
3 Remote Installation Services

Sysprep Installation needs ghost software and Remote Installation Services
is not what you want, so we can only choose 1.Windows Unattended Setup.
For detailed information, you can refer to "Using Winnt.exe to Run Setup"
section in Deloy help document in Deploy.cab.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forword to hearing
from you.

Sincerely,
