Boot problems w/ XP maybe a virus

Joe

I get the following message when I try to reboot.

Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt.
Windows root\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I then booted to the XP cd and entered the recovery
console and tried to rebuild the bootcfg.

I did bootcfg /rebuild and is starts scanning the I get
an error message. Failed to scan disks for windows
installations. This error may be caused by a corrupt
file system, which would prevent Bootcfg from scanning.
Use chkdsk to detect and disk errors.

So I ran chkdsk and it completed ok. If I try bootcfg
again I get the same thing.

I don't have a backup of my harddrive so I really need to
get the data off of it or I wouldn just strat from
scratch. Help Please!!!!

Thanks:

Joe
