boot.ini problem

Mr Big

Dear users,
I have a problem with boot.ini file.

I cannot find the file and I cannot create it because I get access
denied. I have gone through the following procedure (as Administrator).

attrib -r -s -h boot.ini file not found
copy boot.ini.works boot.ini access denied, file exists
????????

Writing a new boot.ini in an editor and saving it also gives acces
denied. I have also started with the CD, gone into repair and tried to
recreate it. It finds the installation but cannot add it due to access
denied. The PC boots with a message like "boot.ini does not exist,
using c:\windows\system32".
Any idea how I can recreate boot.ini?

Background:
The PC had two HD and the boot drive was about to crash so I moved the
boot partition to the other HD using Norton Ghost (great utility BTW).
The boot drive was in a really bad condition so the procedure took a
long. I removed the old drive, reconfigured the slave as a master and
rebooted. The rest you know. I guess boot.ini on the old drive was in
some bad sectors and something strange happened during the copy
procedure. Then again, the solution can be very simple.

Sincerely

Hi

Boot into Safe Mode, open Windows Explorer and find boot.bak - re-name it to
boot.ini and then reboot into normal mode.

Thanks for the reply but your suggestion didn't work. Still same
problem: "access deny" and I didn't have boot.bak so I tried my own
backup (perhaps that's what you meant).

sincerely

Mr. Big,

You need to check 'show hidden files & folders' in the 'Folder Options >
View' of Windows Explorer or when doing a search you need to check 'Advanced
options' and check the first 3 boxes in Advanced Options, one being 'search
hidden files & folders. Both boot.ini & boot.bak are in your C://Windows
folder because you did boot your computer.

Boot.ini and boot.bak are in the root of C, not C:\Windows.
It is possible for a computer to boot without boot.ini.

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

I could find boot.ini.backup file in the windows/pss directory. I
renamed it to boot.ini as well as copied it to the windows directory.
It wouldn't allow me to copy it to the c:\ because there already is a
file with that name, which I cannot see. When booting, I still get the
message "error in boot.ini, booting from c:\windows" (translation from
Swedish). Well, I guess I must live with it. I just hope nothing else
is wrong.

Still doesn't work. I can't see the boot.ini file which means I can't
change its rights. I give up.

thanks for your help!

Don't give up, Mr Big.
There is a solution somewhere.

On the Start-Run line, type CMD and hit enter.
Type CD\ and hit enter to put you in the Root Directory.

Type ATTRIB and hit enter to see all the attributes on the list.
Boot.ini should be listed with an H for hidden.

Another route to Boot.ini,
Click Start,
Right click My Computer, and select properties,
Click Advanced,
Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings button.
Click Edit button

Good Luck

Well, I have edited boot.ini many times earlier so your suggestion was
the first thing I tried. The problem is boot.ini is not listed so I
tried to create a new one in an editor. Saving it as boot.ini gives me
access denied, so the file does exist in the root. I also took
ownership but it still doesn't show up. bootcfg /recreate (from
recovery CD) also fails with access denied. Since the PC boots up, I
can live with it. I just don't know what the problem is, which is
irritating.
thanks!

I tried that. The "standard operating system" is blank and greyed out.
Hitting "edit" gives me access denied.
This is something that came from copying the partitions using Ghost, I
am sure of that. I am, however, a novice user of Norton Ghost.
thanks!

Actually, the only thing (I can think of) I haven't tried is to run
"fixmbr" from recovery CD. I cannot see how that can help, since the
MBR is OK becaues the PC actually boots. Am I wrong?

Have you got Vista installed on this machine? If so, you're out of luck.
