I have an 18-month old Dell desktop with XP Home
Edition. Got an error message indicating a problem with
the boot.ini file (missing or corrupted file <windows
root>\system32\hal.dll). Followed MS Knowledge Base
article: booted from XP CD-ROM and went into Recovery
Console, but have made no progress on resolution:
(1)BOOTCFG /LIST shows no entries in the boot file;
(2)BOOTCFG /REBUILD and /ADD return an error saying the
scan could not be completed, indicating a corrupt file
system; and
(3)CHKDSK /P returns an error message indicating "the
volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable
problems."
Where do I go from here? Help, please!
Thanks,
