started a week ago, when i turn on my computer it hangs on the asus screen
for a minute then says "boot failure, insert disk". When I then turn my
computer off & then back on, it loads without a problem. this happens
everytime the computer has been off for a few hrs. any suggestions?

It sounds as though the CMOS battery needs changing. CMOS is a store of
information about your computer and its environment such as the type of hard
disk and other hardware and the time and date used in the boot process.
This kept 'live' by the CMOS battery. If the battery has insufficient
charge the information is lost and the poor computer doesn't what time of
day it is or anything about itself. Imagine waking up on the morning after
a night on the booze. There just isn't the ability to remember where you
are what day it is etc.

Changing the CMOS battery should not be a difficult job. Having said that
I've know a few computers (designed by sadists) that are downright difficult
to do this simple task.

How do you check if your CMOS battery needs changing? You wait until the
computer doesn't boot up properly!

Seriously though, it's not worth putting a meter on it. Indeed, you've go
to take it out to check it and by doing so you've lost your settings anyway
so you might as well put another one in.

Could be the hdd or it's cables.
If the hdd is a newer one too, check the manufacturer's website, to see
if they have a diagnostic tool for thier drives.
