Boot failure after video driver update

I have an HP Vectra VL800 with an Nvidia GEForce2 video
card. The operating system is Windows 2000 professional
with all the latest service packs and updates applied.

Recently via Windows Update I installed an updated video
driver for this system. The update appeared to progress
normally until the system rebooted. During reboot, when
the video switched to high resolution mode, the system
crashed with a blue screen and immediately started the
boot cycle over again. The blue screen was brief but I
was able to get UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP from it.

The system boots okay in VGA mode. There is nothing to be
found in the event viewer. I verified that the Intel
chipset software was installed and I flashed the system
bios with the latest offering from HP.

The monitor on this system is a 20" Optiquest Q100. I
replaced it with a 17" Daewoo and lo and behold the system
booted normally. I tried a variety of other monitors with
similar successful results, but the Optiquest is the only
20" monitor I have.

I've run out of ideas. The older video driver works okay
and for now I guess I'll have to continue using it. I
can't help but think there is a bug in the new driver but
after much research I haven't found any information about
this issue. Any thoughts about this problem would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

I forgot to mention that I did try the driver on the
Nvidia website. That driver is a newer release than the
one in Windows Update. I got the same results with the
newer driver as well.
