Boot Errors with Windows XP

My new machine was functioning well, until I belatedly instaled AVG Antivirus
and discovered that I had already picked up the Backdoor IRC and Kepler(?)
worms or trojans.

I subsequently followed the quarantine procedure and deleted the
permissable files discovered but was informed that there were damaged
essential files that could not be dealt with. I then used Tune-Up Utilities
2004 to clean up the registry and took some of their tweak advice.

The machine still appeared to be OK but on the next start-up it would not
boot Windows from the hard drive and asked for the restore cd. I probably
made an error here, as after a couple of attempts at 'fixing' Windows, to no
avail, I decided that it would be better to simply do a clean install, so
followed the instructions to clear the partition and re-install XP.

Now when I boot up I still can't get Windows up and running. Using the
recovery cd I can see that there is a Windows installation on C:, and have
used the BOOTCFG command to poit at it (now listed 3 times in the BOOTCFG!)
but I get the following error messages at various points in the boot process:

"This computer has a non-standard or invalid master boot record"

"An unexpected error (32769) occured at line 5152 in
d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\setup.c."

The 'hang' point is at "verifying dmi pool data" and sometimes goes on to
give the message:

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

Can anyone shed any light?

Your hard drive may have problems. I would download
diagnostic utility for your hard drive from your hard
drive manufacturer. Look for your hard disk model and
download and run it. Run all tests. This will tell you if
you have a problem
