Hi, All,
I believe I might have a problem with my eight month old Dell 5150 laptop
(Pentium 4\HT, 512 MB RAM, Win XP Home Ed.)
The system basically works well, although it takes over two minutes to boot up.
There are no error messages, etc.
I've been surfing the 'net out of curiosity, and I have found a number of web
sites that suggest "tweaks" to speed up boot time. (I HAVE NOT TRIED ANY OF
THESE YET, and I haven't made any changes to my Boot.ini or other boot files,
or my Registry!!)
One of the tweaks suggested is to make sure the feature is enabled that allows
Win XP to do a Boot Defrag, by checking the Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
and making sure the value for "Enable" is set to "Y"
When I checked the appropriate Registry key on my system this is what I see:
(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
Enable REG_SZ Y
<no entry for TimeFileStamp>
LcnEndLocation REG_SZ 0
LcnStartLocation REG_SZ 0
OptimizeComplete REG_SZ No
OptimizeError REG_SZ Missing Registry Entries
Does this mean that my machine has NEVER succesfully completed a Boot Defrag?
Is there anything I can do to find out what the "Missing Registry Entries" are,
and how to either restore them or clear the Registry keys so the system tries
again to do the defrag?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!
Ken
