I am leaving this message in this newsgroup because the
clowns at MS have no discernable way to report this kind of
activity through there website. Typical.
I have received five emails today announcing security
updates from Microsoft. The emails looks very convincing
and include links to real MS web pages. The subjects of the
emails are entitled "Latest Internet Patch", "Notice", and
"Net Upgrade". Three of the emails have attachments
entitled: 1)Pack79.exe; 2) installation459.exe; and 3)
pack.exe.
It is my understanding that Microsoft has stated in no
uncertain terms that they do not send unsolicited emails
containing patches or upgrades. This leads me to conclude
that this is an attempt to distribute malicious software
under the guise of Microsoft.
It would have been a simple thing to inform Microsoft of
this activity if there was any capability to send feedback
or alerts regarding Microsoft products via their website.
If anyone reading this message is a representative of this
company, perhaps they can find a way to inform (or wake up)
some responsible people.
There is no reason to reply to this message as I do not
monitor this newsgroup and I have no good reason to use a
valid email address here. If Microsoft had the good sense
to provide for incoming information such as this, I would
have been happy to provide my address and forward the
relevant emails so that, in case anyone at Microsoft knows
something about computers and/or email, someone could
attempt to track down the culprits.
