Bluetooth configuration is a nightmare!

I am trying to configure my IBM T41's (WinXP+SP1) Bluetooth setup
such, that I can use my Sony-Ericsson P900 as a dial-up modem as well
as allowing me to synchronize my Outlook PIM data with that device
(two standard desires one would assume...).

But configuring the Bluetooth setting is a nightmare and 200%
counter-intuitive. All the tools and wizards are either not working or
blatantly lying at you! E.g. when I open "My Bluetooth Places" and
click "view devices in range" it displays devices that are switched
off or even not present at all.
This strange tool even allows me to "open" or "explore" devices that
are not present! What kind of shit is this? How is one supposed to
configure or set up things, when the tools used don't display the
current status?

And the whole COM port story is complely inconsistent, too! E.g. in
Control-Panel => Phone and Modem options => modems I see a "Bluetooth
Modem" attached to a port COM 9 that does not even exist, neither in
Device Manager under Ports nor in the Bluetooth Configuration! In the
former I have a BT Communications Port (COM6), in the latter I have
TWO BT Serial ports (a COM6 and a COM 7).

And of course, when I try to configure a dial-up network connection it
offers neither of these COM 6, COM 7 nor COM 9, but only COM 1!

How am I supposed to shove an RS-232 cable into a BT antenna?

This whole BT thing doesn't fly at all!

I would remove all the ports except for 1 & 2 and start
over reinstalling them. See below !!!

The com port thing is a joke, you'll never get a answer
in
here, cause nobody knows.

Com 1 and Com 2 are physical ports and have IRQ
assignments
From there the ports are virtual There 256 of them. The
problem is once they are assigned they cannot be deleted,
but they can be un-installed there a trick to do. I had a
laptop that I was having issues with and had gone up to
port 16, from failed installs. The program would not
recognize anything above port 5. When you install
something it is automatically assigned the first open
port, but it goes to the higher # ( if 5,6,7 are open and
8,9 are (in use) it will assign port 10 you install
something, thus the problem.

How I corrected it was to take a USB modem and keep
installing it and go into the device manager and change
it
to a port that showed (in Use) that I knew was not, then
when that port is accepted go back in and uninstall it.
Go to the advanced tab> advanced Port settings>
Com port # and then force it to the one you want out
select it> ok, then back out. Then un-install it,
reinstall it
and repeat till you get them out.
