Hello
This is a more fleshed out variant of the problem i described in "0x0000008E"
Recently my computer became very unstable (it would die randomly, although
it would happen more often if programs are running) to the point where i had
to wipe my hard drive. But the problems carried over afterward, and i
couldn't install windows again. The setup process would be unable to transfer
some files, claiming the CD might be to blame (I have had the CD for two
months, new when i purchased it and there is nary a scratch or a blemish on
it) then, at the end of the process, i would get one of two Stop errors:

-0x0000008E (0xE27Ed1A4, 0x00000001, 0x808829EE, 0x00000001) or
-0x0000004E (0x00000099, 0x00000CEC, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I'm not sure what any of this means (some have suggested it's a problem with
the RAM) but i should point out that I assembled the computer myself with new
parts in July, and had it running with no problems for 6 weeks before this
errors commenced. I also did not install any new hardware or software in the
weeks leading up to the commencement of these problems. Windows installed
fine the first time, too...I tried to run Microsoft's RAM scan tool, but it
wouldn't run either.

Any ideas?

See my reply to your earlier message on this one. The parameter
values do not seem correct to me, or they are not in the proper
sequence.

A STOP 0x0000004E is a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error.
This indicates that the memory management Page File Number list is
corrupted. Can be caused by corrupt physical RAM, or by drivers
passing bad memory descriptor lists.

I'm not sure what any of this means (some have suggested it's a problem with
the RAM) but i should point out that I assembled the computer myself with new
parts in July, and had it running with no problems for 6 weeks before this
errors commenced. I also did not install any new hardware or software in the

As defective RAM is identified as a possible cause for both your
errors you should try to eliminate this as a possible suspect. The
fact that the Microsoft memory test would not run on your computer is
an indicator that there is something possibly amiss with the hardware
in your machine, although a corrupted download might also cause this
behavior.

Download one of the following free memory testers and create the
bootable test diskette or CD for it.
DocMemory http://www.simmtester.com
Memtest86: http://www.memtest86.com/vxcz

Then boot your computer with the memory tester disk and run the
complete test for multiple passes. Best idea would be to run it
overnight.

And if your RAM passes the test without error then download the other
test program and repeat the test sequence with it.

Another good diagnostic is Tufftest. It tests all of the hardware,
not just the RAM. The free version can be downloaded from
http://www.tufftest.com/free.htm

Good luck
