Blue Screen of Death in Windows XP

Installing XP Professional on a brand new computer with a full version of XP
Pro. Everything seems to go fine until I get to the point where I have to
enter the product ID number. Once I enter the number correctly it goes
directly to the Blue Screen of Death and displays the following errors.

Winxp Stop Error

0X0000008E ( 0XC0000005, 0XBF80189 BASE AT BF800000, DATESTAMP 41107F7A
BEGIN DUMP OF PHYSICAL MEMORY.

Could this be a Windows XP or a memory error?

I think you may have missed a couple of parameters when you
transcribed the STOP error message.

The value 0XBF80189 may have appeared twice in the message which may
have confused you while writing it down.

It should have looked something like this:

0X0000008E ( 0XC0000005, 0XBF80189 <something> 0X00000000)
<possibly a module name> Address 0XBF80189 BASE AT BF800000, DATESTAMP
41107F7A

The value of the third parameter <something> is not especially crucial
to resolving this problem but if there was a module name mentioned
just before the word Address then that is crucial information.

The offending module is the one that is being loaded at address
BF800000.

From that address I suspect that this may involve Win32k.sys and if so
there are several known instances where this error can occur.

Does your Windows XP install CD have Service Pack 2 integrated into
it? If not then you may need to create a new install CD with Service
Pack 2 slipstreamed into it.

Hope this is of some assistance.

Good luck
