Blue screen freeze during XP Pro setup

I am not too sure where to start here..... . I have just bought an XP
Upgrade disk which I am having terrible problems installing onmy
desktop. The conversion on my laptop went like a dream by booting from
the XP disk so I know the CD is OK.

I have tried to install the upgrade and the new installion options from
the disk but my PC just freezes after the first installation reboot. The
PC starts OK and proceeds to the blue 'Windows Setup' screen and
then..........nothing. It just freezes. When I reset I am given the
options of continuing with the setup or starting XP. If I select
continue, it reboots and then just back to that damn blue screen again

I even went thru the painfully slow task of downloading the 6 XP boot
disks from MS but the PC still sticks at the same place. I know that
when the setup is going fine, a scroll bar at the bottom of the screen
displays the files it is adding, but my screen is just blue with the
'Windows Setup' text at the top left.

It is getting to the stage now where I am left holding clumps of my
hair

All my data is backed up and I just want to wipe this damn disk.

Any ideas guys and gals!!

Maybe the money I will save on haircuts (if this continues) could go
towards a new HDD.

BTW I am using XP Pro SP2 (or should I say trying to upgrade to from
WinME)

What are the specs for the ME machine? Will the ME machine boot to Windows?
If so, see if the XP CD will load to the main menu screen and run the
compatibility test.

Download/run MemTest86 overnight to check you RAM.

On a side note, if you only purchased one OS CD with a single license, it
would be illegal to install it on the ME machine if as I read it, you installed
it on your laptop.

Have tried on 3 different cd drives. I have even invested in a new HD
and tried to install it on that but the same problem. I am trying t
eliminate the possible causes:

New HDD - same problem
Formatted Laptop and reinstalled XP so CD is OK
PC is running 512MB RAM

The only thing I can now think of is My m/board (Asrock K7VT4A+) whic
is running the latest bios vers or maybe my cpu (AMD Sempron 2800) bu
surely other things would of flagged up if any of these where a
fault.

It seems that this is a common problem as I have googled it and wa
suprised at the number of people with the same issue

Please help. This is driving me to insanity.

Btw Brian, am I wrong in thinking that the owner of the license i
allowed to use the software on a personal Laptop. I can boot to window
and have run the compatibility test which does not highlight an
issues.
