Blue Screen after Patch Tuesday's Updates

Having blue screen at boot up after patch Tuesdays updates. Running WinXP
Pro. SP2. Have never experienced any problems with this computer in three
years.

Have done a disk check, virus scan and malware scan. Did a scan with
Highjack This, but everything appears normal. The computer is clean.

Immediately after the updates, instead of restarting, I shutdown the
computer for the day. Wednesday morning at boot up I received a message
that the system had recovered from a serious error. (from the Event Viewer)
Event ID 7022 The User Profile Hive Cleanup service hung on starting.

Thursday all was fine.

Today the computer booted normally in the morning. When I came home again
late afternoon and booted, I received the same ‘system has recovered from a
serious error message.. The following was in the Event Viewer.

Event ID 1003
Error code 000000c2, parameter1 00000041, parameter2 8a2f2000, parameter3
0000a0f2, parameter4 000bf7ef.

Following, there were three events logged all similar to this: The iPod
Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion.
Events 7009, 7000 and 10,005

I’m assuming the system hung before they could start.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. If I use System Restore and go back to
Monday, will I mess up all the updates and end up with a bigger problem?

Do NOT use System Restore to undo updates or you'll have even worse
problems! If you suspect an update has caused a problem, uninstall it & see
if the problem persists.

0x000000C2: BAD_POOL_CALLER
A kernel-mode process or driver incorrectly attempted to perform memory
operations. Typically, a faulty driver or buggy software causes this.

Did you also install a driver update offered by Windows Update and/or
recently install new hardware?

PS: Are you aware of the fact that WinXP SP2 machines will not be offered
any further updates after July 2010 but WinXP SP3 machines will be offered
updates through October 2014?

Thanks for your quick reply. I’ve read your postings for a few years and
know your advise is good.

No, I didn’t add any new drivers, but did update a program two days prior to
the XP Updates....that being a new version of iTunes. I’ve just disabled all
startup, services and processes that have to do with this program to see if
it’s the culprit. If not, I guess I’ll just start uninstalling the XP
updates one by one.

I am aware of the support cutoff unless I install XP3. I’ve read all the KB
articles pertaining to what can go wrong after the installation. The most
significant of these problems have to do with my Realtek Audio. I have
Realtek on both my desktop and laptop. Microsoft offers an update to
Realtek, but both computer manufactures state on their sites not to download
any drivers from Windows Update. Who to believe?

As I mentioned in my first posting, I’ve been reasonably problem free for
thirteen years so this why I’m a little concerned over SP3.

Thank you, John. My driver is dated 9-23-05. I guess the file Windows
Update is offering must be the one you have. After I solve my current
problem, I’ll install it and give SP3 a try.

I have Realtec AC'97 Audio and SP3 with no problems.
My Realtec driver is version 5.10.0.6160 dated 8/18/06

If you updated iTunes on Sunday and then installed Windows Updates on
Tuesday and rebooted several times but only encountered this BSOD on Friday,
I'd very much doubt the iTunes or Windows Updates would have caused the
BSOD.

That being said, you might try using a Restore Point from Thursday (or
Wednesday, as long as it post-dates the install of Windows Updates).
Alternately, you might try restarting using Last Known Good Configuration
(cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852).

If still no joy, take the computer to a local, reputable, and independent
(not BigBoxStore USA or Geek Squad) shop.

OT #1: Millions of users have installed SP3 without encountering any
problems. That being said, the year-long, free unlimited installation and
compatibility support for Windows XP SP3 ended on 14 April 2009, so if you
do encounter problems, MS support is gonna cost you at least $159.00
USD/hour.

OT #2: Get Realtek driver updates from Realtek or the computer manufacturer,
if need be.

Clarification regarding your statement below:

I updated iTunes on Sunday. I did the Windows Update on Tuesday afternoon
but did NOT reboot as required. Shutdown computer. At startup on Wednesday
morning I got the BSOD.
Thursday had no problems. Friday morning no problems. At bootup Friday
late afternoon received the BSOD. Today, Saturday so far no problems, but I
did disable everything pertaining to iPod and iTunes.

I did not install the new version of iTunes on the laptop and so far am
having no problems with that computer

I wish there was a definite pattern to these occurrences. It could just be
a coincidence that I got the blue screen on the desktop after the updates.

Regarding second statement: As you can see, immediately upon bootup after
the Update, my problems began. So I would be afraid to use system restore.

Regarding third statement: Neither desktop or laptop manufacturer offers an
update for Realtek. Nor do they offer support for SP3

Again, thank you for your input....you gave me several ways to look at the
problem while I search for a solution.

UPDATE to my original message...should it help anyone else. I have
experienced no further problems and my system is currently trouble free for
well over a week. Apparently something in one of the Windows Updates did not
get along with the new version of iTunes.
