Bloody Microsoft Picture-It overriding default association?

Hi Folks,

Here's the problem: a system which somehow came pre-installed with MS
Picture It (WinXP, currently at SP2 level).

I don't use Picture It, I don't like it. I installed my favorite
freeware image viewer (Irfanview) and my favorite image editor. Yet MS
Picture It keeps starting as the default application for PCX files.

Even if I right-click on a .pcx, click on "open with..." select my
preferred application (Irfanview) and then select the "always use this
application to load this file type" checbox, bloody MS Picture It keeps
being the default.

At this point I'd uninstall the damn thing but I just want to see why
MS insists on setting their own applications as the preferred
application, even overriding the user's selections.

I'm sure there's a explorer hook somewhere that's getting in the way of
the defautl associations.

Any ideas?. Thanks.

PictureIt is part of older Microsoft Office installations. Go to
Add/Remove Programs and click on the entry for MS Office. When you
start the removal, you'll have a choice to modify instead of only
completely uninstalling. Take that choice and uninstall just PictureIt.
