Kent,

Windows Firewall (XP SP2) will filter incoming traffic, but on a port / service
level. For each port / service, you can change the scope to permit traffic from
specific addresses (Edit - Change scope - Custom list), but it doesn't look like
it will be a very easy process.

I think you'd be better off using a third party firewall like Kerio or Zone
Alarm. For more advice, you might want to ask in comp.security.firewalls.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

well....
Yesterday, doing netstat -a showed me an established
connection into some url outside my winxp pro box which I
don't even know who they are.
I have to consider 3rd party firewall program then ...
thanks chuck ...

If you're worried about an item in netstat, and want to do a bit of
investigating, Get Port Explorer (free) from
<http://www.diamondcs.com.au/portexplorer/index.php?page=home> to show you what
network connections your computer is actually opening, and what processes are
opening them.
And Process Explorer (free) from
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml>. Provides way more
information than Task Manager.

Otherwise, a software firewall will help.
