Blocking access to certain web sites

I would like to know if settings or controls are available in
Internet Explorer (6.0) to prevent access to certain web sites.

Situation - There is a particular search engine I use. When I go to
the site for the search engine, I usually get 2 additional browser
windows opening with 2 other sites. When search results are returned,
there are another 2 browser windows opened with yet another 2 web
sites.

The four web sites in question are always the same and I have no
interest in them, so I hoped I could block or filter out those
specific site URLs.

I'm quite knowledgeable about computers, but not on the subjects of IE
browser or Java script, which I THINK is what allows or causes the
additional browser windows to open with these other sites.

If IE6 cannot do this and I need to get a "site blocking" type of
program, would you recommend a particular program ?

Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer assistance with this.

A good HOSTS file is good for you:

http://asp.flaaten.dk/proxo/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1434 <== just updated to
include 17776 rogue sites.

A good HOSTS file manager to remove duplicates:
