I've been trying to find out why I can not update my
computer with the new Microsoft security patch. When I
try to download the patch onto my computer, I'm getting
an error massage that reads:

set up could not verify integrity of the file update.inf
make sure cryptographic service is running.

Can someone help me find out what I should do. Please be
gentle where I'm not very well versed with computers, and
this is my last alternative.

Try renaming the catroot folder...this is what I did and I was able to get
the download.

I've been trying to find out why I can not update my
computer with the new Microsoft security patch. When I
try to download the patch onto my computer, I'm getting
an error massage that reads:

make sure cryptographic service is running.

Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will
generate a new, clean folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.

Then get the patch, which should now be OK and follow it with - only -
Q817287. That is the cure for the problem: you should then be able to
carry on with other updates, and the problem will not recur
