Blaster patch used to advertise MSN 8 !

I downloaded the patch 2 days ago to avoid Blaster. Ever since the patch was
installed, I have experienced the following problem:

First, I have always had my "home" page set by default to
"http://my.msn.com/". As everyone knows, this is the MSN home page,
customized slightly for personal preferences. That is not the problem. The
problem is that now, when I open my browser after about 10 minutes of not
having the browser open, my browser is now redirected to a promotion page
for MSN 8 !! This also happens if I spend more than 10 or 20 minutes surfing
at other sites and then click the "home" button.

Once I have been redirected to the ad page, if I click on my "home" button,
it will then go to the correct site. Also, if I return to "home" frequently,
I don't get redirected and everything is fine. However, If I don't go to
"home" for a while, then when I do go, it immediately redirects me to this
other page. The URL I get sent to is:
http://join.msn.com/?page=affiliate/offer&UNC=1&pgmarket=en-us.

I called MS and they were all rude or just played dumb, but this is real. My
internet setting still has http://my.msn.com/ as the default. This is
driving me CRAZY ! Does anybody know what is going on? I am not a novice or
a newbie, and I have reasonably good computer skills. I write code for a
living, but not web code, so I don't know how this is happening. I figured
that since the timing is an issue, the problem must be in script in my PC.
Also, since this happened immediately after installing the security patch,
I'm blaming it. I've deleted my cookies and temp files, but nothing has
changed. PLEASE HELP!

OK, fine. It is extremely annoying and my initial reaction perhaps was off
track. Digging a little further suggests there might be a bit of spyware
involved. However, I did feel kind of funny after that drink I had with Bill
Gates last week. I just didn't think anything of it at the time. I mean, he
just seemed like a nice guy and everything.

My first guess would be that it is a simple coincidence. The mere fact that
two events occur sequentially in no way guarantees or even suggests that the
first caused the second. Since you seem to be the only person compaining of
this it seems unlikely that the patch is the cause given the (literally)
millions of people who have installed it in the past few days. More likely
is that MSN is simply plugging their service and have done something which
causes the page to redirect after a period of inactivity. Of course if you
are convinced that MS is out to get you in particular I guess they could
have been watching for you to download the patch and slipped you a "special"
one... ;-)
