Blaster Aftermath

Mimi Laubach

My computer running Windows 2000 was hit with the Blaster virus. I
downloaded the patch, updated my virus definitions but now my computer takes
FOREVER to boot up and it will not restart or shutdown from the Start menu.
I have to manually turn off the computer each time. When it goes into sleep
mode, it will not come back so I have changed my power options to keep it on
all the time.

Can anyone help me to get my computer back to quicker start ups or at least
get it to shutdown? Thanks very much.

Hi Mimi - Try this. Go to Start|Run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the
quotes and notice the space between the c and the /.) Have your Win2k CD
handy and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it takes a while. This
will find any corrupt system files and replace them. Re-boot after it's
done. It does not, however, re-register the various software components
(except possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

Jim,

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it and scannow didn't come up with any
errors. I tried to shut down the computer after running scannow and it was
still the same-not shutting down at all. I restarted it and it was still
incredibly slow. I found another posting that suggested downloading Fix
Blaster from Symantec which I did and ran but still the competer doesn't
shut down.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Mimi

Hi Mimi - I think you're going to have to provide some more detailed
information before I can go any further. There are many possible causes of
shutdown problems. Tell me exactly what happens when you try to shut down.
When you click on Start|Shutdown . . . Do you get a Shut Down Windows
window with a dropdown box to select from? If so, what happens when you
select shutdown? restart? if you select one and then wait a LONG time?
What happens if you do CNTL-ALT-DEL? Do you get a Windows Security window
with a button that says Shutdown? What happens if you click on it? Do you
then get the Shut Down Windows window? etc. etc.

It doesn't appear you got rid of the virus possibly.

Open up services, and make sure RPC is started. This was stopped from the
blaster and so you couldn't do many things.

Try this, it should get you going. I had this issue with a bunch of my
servers the week BEFORE the virus hit.
