Blank Attachments Outlook

B

blah

When I upgraded to Outlook 2003, I started noticing that the majority
of my email attachments appear blank.

The attachments that are not affected are files that are associated
with programs other than outlook. For example, I can open and save
*.doc attachments without any problems.

However, when I open routine attachments, outlook opens a window which
is blank. If I save the attachment as a *.msg file and then try to
open it... it still appears blank. If I open the file with notepad, I
can see the actual text of the attachment (along with the other
microsoft-generated data).

Based on this information, I am assuming my version of Outlook 2003 is
just not displaying these attachments for whatever reason.

Please assist. Thanks in advance.

Most likely Outlook is just hiding them from you. The newer or updated
versions often have the default security settings set higher.

Check out the security settings for attachments and see. It is likely
it is eliminating those that may contain nasty executable code.

I am especially fond of Attachment Options is a COM add-in

Options page to the Tools | Options dialog in Outlook 2002
to allow you to manage which file attachments are blocked.

Thank you for responding to my message. I have posted this a couple
of times and this is the first response I have seen.

Upon searching several people have this same problem.

This is not the routine Outlook is blocking harmful attachments
problem however! Even if the attachment contains only text, it is
blocked. If I forward an email to myself, outlook just displays a
blank attachment! If I save the attachment (to a *.msg file) onto the
desktop and then double-click it, Outlook still displays it as a blank
message.

If I use a text editor and open it, I can see that the file contains
the right data. Outlook is just not showing it to me.

I have opened the security settings as high as possible, no change.

Thanks for trying to help. It is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.. but that's not my problem.

All attachments that can be viewed under Outlook are displayed as
blank messages. Attachments such as word or ppt files are open
easily.

Please, please help somebody!

Could you be a little more specific about what kind of attachments?
Exactly what is the file extension that it is not showing? Are they coming
from a known, trusted source? Have you checked with the source to assure
they intended to send the message and the attachment? Can you save the
attachment to your drive?

Any attachment that is by default opened with outlook opens as a blank
page. These are from trusted sources...

Speaking here of primarily *.msg files...

If I forward myself a message, the subsquent attachment is blank.

If I save the attachment to the desktop and then open it, it is blank.

So if save the forward to the desktop, it saves it as a *.msg file...
when I open the file, it displays as a blank message. If I use
notepad to view the file, the *.msg file contains all the correct
info. Outlook is just not displaying it.

Please help.

I am going to suggest something from left field. Could the it not be
blank, but could the font be white or just very small? I have seen this
happen.
