Bizarre problem with using Sharp LCD as external monitor

Get ready for this one: I recently purchased a Sharp lcd tv and also
bought a DVI/RGB(VGA) conversion cable so I could use my tv as my
monitor for my laptop. All was well and after connecting the cable
and adjusting my display settings to change the Panel to clone and
Monitor to primary. After clicking apply, I could then use my tv as
a monitor. So basically everything was functioning as it was
intended to. So here is where things go crazy:
A few days later after being out of town and returning to use my tv
as my monitor, I hooked it all up and everything appeared to be
working... (IE. Monitor option under advanced display options showed
that it was connected)
But when I click to make the monitor primary and panel clone and click
apply instead of seeing the pc picture showing up on my tv and asking
me to accept it shows back up on my laptop to accept. and even after
clicking yes it shows the monitor being the primary and panel (laptop)
being the clone, yet i cant anything on my tv. I'm not sure what
changed during the time I was gone, but now it doesnt work! I have
tried everything I could think, even purchasing a new cable and still
have had 0 success.
I would appreciate any help I could get concering this and if you
would like to email me to ask further about this sit. please do.
Thanks in advance!
