Bittorrent, fussy requirements

M

Mark Carter

I'm looking for a bittorrent client. There are many to choose from, but
I have some special requirements, listed below.

* not written in Java. I like stuff written in python, but this is not
mandatory.

* Linux, with a strong preference for stuff that's in Debian Testing.

* commandline or curses mode, I'm not running the X Windows GUI.

My intention is to seed the Pricelessware CD from my remote Linux box
running Debian Testing. It doesn't have Java or X Windows on it - and it
never will (!). I don't need the software to act as a client, I need
it to act in a "server style", whereby I can log out of my machine and
the software will keep delivering files.

Any suggestions that meet the above requirements?

Mark ....

I've used qtorrent under Debian Sarge a few times
which is python-based but has a QT front end ....

It looks like a python wrapper around BitTornado ....

# apt-cache show bittornado

Description: bittorrent client with enhanced curses interface
bittorrent is a tool for distributing files. Whenever more
than one person is downloading at once they send pieces of the
file(s) to each other, thus relieving the central server's
bandwidth burden. Even with many simultaneous downloads,
the upload burden on the central server remains quite small,
since each new downloader introduces new upload capacity.

BitTornado is the next generation bittorrent client built
on the original BitTorrent. This client features an enhanced
console/curses mode, lots of new features under the hood,
and is generally one of the most advanced clients out there.

Get this if you need to limit your bandwidth, or you want more
control of your torrents. It does everything the original
bittorrent does, plus more ....
