BitDefender 10 vs Kaspersky 6

Hi,

I'm currently evaluating BitDefender 10 and for now I'm satisfied. But
sometime it slows down my PC a little too much, depending of the
operation it does. For example sometime when I open Firefox it can
takes 8 seconds (instead of 2) to open, and some other time it opens
in 3 seconds! Same thing with some folders. It can vary a lot.

I'm thinking about evaluating Kaspersky to see if it will be better
regarding these slow down but maybe someone here has already runs
these tests and can share his results and conclusion. Something tell
me that they are very similar in performance, but maybe not!

However, to choose Kaspersky the difference must be really visible
because I have 2 PCs and a licence for BitDefender 10 cost $29.95 and
is valid for 2 PCs (and $39.95 for 2 PCs and 2 years!). While a
licence for Kaspersky cost $39.95 and seems to be valid only for one
PC! The difference in $$$ is big.

Thanks for your answers.

Hey!

I was in your same shoes; I was looking at Trend Micro instead of
Kapersky but same thing. I did not notice a huge difference. I did
find out after I purchased that BD had scored tops in a Consumer
Report study - they threw about 5000 (iirc) viruses at it that they
comissioned someone from Russia to make (in other words 100% unknown
viruses) and BD was the only one who picked them up.

I felt pretty good about it!

FYI I picked mine up at http://antivirus.citationsoft.com - they still
have the standard pack for the price I saw it up for, $35.96. I bought
the Antivirus Plus for $44.96 (I HATE SPAM!) 2 years / 2 users on mine
too.

HTH!

Depends on your machines. I can tell you that KAV 6 causes no
noticeable slowdowns on my 1.6 ghz 256M RAM machines.

Why not try a free eval of KAV or KIS 6 and find out?

If you can live without the extra protection modules in KAV 6 then
try out the free AVS offering from AOL:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
which is based on KAV6. It's really kewl! Just don't opt for the
toolbar during installation. And make sure you have no other AV
product installed when you try to install either AVS or KAV 6 since
they will balk.

Hey thanks! :)

I also hate spam but since I use Thunderbird, which has an integrated
spam filter, I don't need it, and I also use a router for my home
network so I don't need the firewall part neither. At least that's
what people said, with a router we don't need a firewall, but anyway I
use the built-in one provided with windows XP, just in case, so.

Thanks for the info. :)

I know I can do that, but since many people probably did the same
tests why don't share the result? And beside the review I read I'm
almost sure that KAS will have the same performance, so I didn't want
to waste time uninstalling, installing, uninstalling...

I work a lot with my 2 PCs so I prefer the full protection. However I
also read that AVS work only for one year.

Thanks for you comment.

Neither the router nor the XP firewall tell you anything about outbound
traffic. There's always the possibility that you may contract a "day zero"
Trojan that an A-V won't detect.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. Neither I know what a "day
zero" means, but it sounds bad enough! :)

But do you know if the firewall shipped with the version Plus of
BitDefender will do the job? It is surely better than the XP
firewall.

I know that the antivirus BitDefender is well rated but I didn't check
for its firewall.

Can you tell me how the antispam works with the Plus version?

Does it simply put something like "**SPAM**" at the beginning of the
subject and you just have to create a filter to catch them and process
them in your mail reader?

Welcome. "Day zero" is the first day that malware is released. Anti-malware
programs won't pick it up because it hasn't been included in the signature
data base yet.

I don't know anything about BitDefender. I use the free version of Zonealarm
for a software firewall, seems to work well.

I use Kaspersky 6 on my laptop and it does not slow it down. This is the
reason I chose it and because it got good reviews.
If you register all your computers from the same IP address (all my
computers use the same Wifi router), you can use the same version of
Kaspersky on all of them. I have one version of Kaspersky running on the two
PCs and 2 laptops I have at home. I use the Windows firewall.

You're right. I finally uninstalled BD and install KAV on my laptop
and for now everything works fine, no noticiable slow down at all.
If you register all your computers from the same IP address (all my
computers use the same Wifi router), you can use the same version of
Kaspersky on all of them.

I also use the same Wifi router (Linksys) for my 2 PCs.

And by saying the "same version of Kaspersky" I guess you mean the
same "license"? I'm surprise it works because it's easy to send some
hardware info with the license each time it updates its signature to
check if the license is used on more than one PC! Maybe they don't
bother as long as it cames from the same IP (so the same home).

I mean the same licence. You appear to be able to use the same licence
repeatedly as long as you register from the same IP address.

Heyas;

AntiSpam works with Bayesian filtering; from what I found on Google
that means it "learns" from the emails that are flagged as spam or as
friends, apart from being able to do a list of words it should flag
for and you can also tell it to exempt or flag emails and domains. I
like it; it also gives you a toolbar for Outlook.

I do know that BD is pretty good with Day 0 stuff. They where the only
ones that picked up 5000 unknown viruses and crap in a Consumer
Reports test last year.

Firewall is pretty good IMO. It scans incoming, outgoing, and keeps
track of local program access.

So was should one use? This is the question I feel I can
never figure out although I have some vague understanding
that it can be a serious problem.

Okay, the XP firewall or a router block *only* incoming threats such as
software that probes your system for open ports. If you should contract
malware that hasn't been added to your A-V data base yet, a "day zero" Trojan
horse or key logger, then it may attempt to "call home". A software firewall,
Zonealarm or Kerio for instance, will alert you to this outgoing attempt and
give you the choice to allow or deny the connection.

I would suggest looking at <www.grc.com>, especially the Shields UP page
<http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2>. A lot to read but a lot of
information also.
