"Birthday celebrations are actually rooted in pagan and wiccan traditions. In the ancient world of Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Persia people typically celebrated the birthdays of gods, kings, and nobles with grand parties but the keeping of birthday records was important for everyone principally because a birth date was essential for the casting of a horoscope, numerology and various other oracles. So, as you can see there is a direct connection between the Pagan practice of birthday celebrations and astrology, horoscopes and fortune telling. Because of this the early Christians did not celebrate Christ’s birth as they considered the celebration of anyone’s birth to be a pagan custom.

Candles on the cake were part of the magic ritual to bless the food with the ability to protect those that partake of it from evil spirits and also to attract good fortune etc. Candles of various magical colors would be placed among the food gather for the feast and an incantation recited then the food was consumed to grant the blessing to all of those that would partake of it. So if you have ever baked a cake and placed candles on it then sung (chanted a blessing incantation) Happy Birthday then made a wish and blown out the candles you have actually participated in a Pagan ritual."
