BIOS S.M.A.R.T. Compatibilty

Hi
I have just installed a new BIOS upgrade (Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG) by
eSupport.com people. The Western Digital support ( the makers of my 120 GB
hard disk -WD-WMAEL1188961) assured me that
"The S.M.A.R.T feature on all Western Digital hard drives is built in and
enabled by default".
After installing the new BIOS I am still informed that The S.M.A.R.T feature
is disabled. I could not find in the BIOS Setup any option of either
enabling or disabling the S.M.A.R.T. feature.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The motherboard, CMOS and BIOS must have the SMART feature built into them
in order to take advantage of this feature. It appears not to be available
for your system.

It sounds like it's either turned off in the bios or nonfunctional for some
reason. If you flashed the bios, it all went back to default, so you may
need to change a few things. Check the motherboard manual to see what you
have to do to turn on SMART and while you're there, see what else might need
to be adjusted. FWIW, I haven't seen a hard drive for a long time that
didn't have SMART capability right out of the box.

If you have a Gigabyte Motherboard for instance, you have to go to the
advanced settings which are Ctrl+F1. Others may be similar. There you can
implement the SMART function.
