Running Windows XP professional and get a BSOD now on startup stating that BIOS is not ACPI compliant. Have had this problem before and flashed BIOS, restarted and switched to Standard PC and was fine. Did a reinstall a week ago and forgot to change to Standard PC. Now flashing BIOS doesnt work and cant get into Windows to change from ACPI. Running an ASUS A7V133. Any ideas?

Thx

How are u flashing the BIOS? In dos or windows?

Normally you do it in dos after booting from floppy.

And also, after flashing the BIOS, do you go into
the BIOS and set the default settings? And change
whatever then save the settings in BIOS, then reboot?

I am under the impression the the type of PC (ACPI or not) must be set very
early during the XP installation and can not be changed thereafter, at least
not without performing a "repair" installation.

The following link (then down a few pages), discusses how to use the F5 key
to force the type of PC:

Flashing BIOS in DOS, then powering off and loading default settings through BIOS as per instructions. Use AFLASH from ASUS and latest release BIOS which is 20.4.02. There is a beta version from 2003 which I havent tried yet because previously the flashing worked fine with the 2002 BIOS.

Useful article - thx. Looks like a repair may be required - from memory a repair doesnt overwrite my documents, favourites etc? ie you dont need to back these up first?

did you "load default values" in bios/cmos after flashing?

also have you tryed the tool "ASUS Update V5.28.01" get it here
http://www.asus.it/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=Tools&Type=Latest

it worked great for my bios upgrade. (asus p4s333 which is now fried :(

also make sure your careful and dont mess up (read about the bios, tools,
requirement blablabla), cuz you are responsible for your actions and no one
else.

****i must mention that my mainboard did not fry because of the bios
"upgrade"
****it occured after a "downgrade" from a beta to a final version bios.
****but it was not do to this either.

Did you try to boot into safe mode? If you disable acpi in the bios, it will force windows to standard pc mode by default.

Have tried safe mode - still get BSOD after that. Havent been able to see anywhere in BIOS where I can disable ACPI but shall investigate further.

That programme may be useful but am I right in assuming that it runs under windows rather than dos? Naturally I cant run anything under windows at present. As I have no working computer at home I have to trawl the message boards at work.

i cant think of any other advice at the moment.
im sure you may have found this page already.
http://www.asus.it/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A7V133&Type=BIOS
but as you mentioned your prob is more or less OS related

if you plan on ever downloading from asus. use the "http://www.asus.it/"
link. the others just send you in a loop.
