BIOS does not complete POST when doing Shutdown/Restart

Hi,

System:
Motherboard: MSI 7100 (K8N Diamond)
Graphichs adapter: MSI geforce 7600GS
Memory: 4GB memory
OS: XP PRO Sevice pack 2
BIOS: Phonenix AWARDBios 6.00PG(latest version)

When I do Shutdown/restart on my XP Pro it shuts down fine
but then the BIOS skips the POST i.e.
- no beep
- no CPU info provided
- no Memory test info
Instead only the memory timings are displayed. I then press the
restart button and the system restarts normally

Any thoughts?

I've never even heard of a BIOS that goes through its Power *ON* Self
Test (POST) on shut down or restart. The POST normally takes place only
upon the initial application of electrical power (turning an "off"
computer on, in simple terms), which doesn't occur during either a shut
down or a restart. What makes you think that your BIOS should behave
differently? If the motherboard's manual claims that it should POST at
such times, and it doesn't, contact the motherboard manufacturer; this
couldn't possibly have anything to do with the operating system.

Ok thanks,

I cannot see anything about this in the motherboard's manual. But, what you
say makes sense to me.

I've been doing a lot of restarting lately (having problems with getting a
geforce video card and a Soundblaster working at the same time!) and to me
the proper reboot was when I saw the CPU and Total memory information.

Then, this means that the restart option in Windows is not the same as
pressing the restart button because, pressing the button makes the BIOS go
through the POST.

Again, thank you!

The Restart in Windows only does a "warm" reboot of the PC. Warm reboot
displays a limited POST screen, ever since DOS/Windows 3. When you press the
Restart button of the PC, this performs a power cycle which will do a "cold"
boot/reboot. Gold reboots/boots force the complete BIOS POST screen.
