better newsgroup client?

J

John Jay Smith

I would like a newsgroup client that has the ability to find and show me
directly
the replies to my posts if any, so I can go the thread and read.
I would like it to show me the complete thread of the posts...

I am currently using outlook express and I have to manually find the threads
that I have been a part of.

I have a rule making my posts in RED color so I can find them faster.. but
still if you have too many newsgroups
then its too much work...

THANKS

Reds good, yet not really necessary. When you post or respond to an
original post you should see an arrow on the op. If you respond or post
within a thread the arrow will show on the post to which you
responded/posted, not good as then you don't see it in a collapsed thread.
Not to worry, you can either mark it as flagged or watched, your choice.
If you have neither as a column heading, right click the column head and
select Columns, place a check next to either or both and move them to the
top of the order. Now when you respond/post within a thread all you need
to do is click in either column to flag or watch the thread.

Now if you want to check/see only threads in which you are a participant:
On the Menu bar click View > Current View and put a check next to "Show
replies to my messages".

So why not click in the Watch column to show the spectacles icon and
then click on the Watch header to sort by that column? By marking the
threads with the watch flag and sorting the list by that flag then all
the watched threads show up at the top of the message list. Makes it
very easy to check on the watched threads.

The help system has a section called

``Tips and Tricks''

and one of the topics is

``Using Outlook Express keyboard shortcuts.''

However, CTRL+H is not one of the shortcuts that is documented in this
particular topic; either I can't find it, or it has not been
documented anywhere in the help system. It still has interesting
information for an efficient usage of the software, though.

The watch column doesn't have a direction of sort arrow.
The first click on the column header will move the watched messages to the
top or the bottom.
A second click will move the watched messages opposite of the first click.
If you always view at the top and don't do a second click, then the first
click will be at the top.
The same is true with sorting to the bottom. One click will sort to the
bottom.

I have been using this keyboard shortcut for so many years that I actually
forget how I found out about it. Could be that someone else posted it here
years ago and I read the post. I really can't remember (old brain getting
foggy).

Anyway, I am glad that you find it useful.

That's what you get for having SP2, Richard.

I have msimn.exe 6.00.2800.1123 and Ctrl + H is right there on the menu.

I checked my own copy and "Show Replies to My Messages" is
displayed (so that's what that means :) but *not* the CTRL + H
and it's not listed in Help either.

It is a very useful capability and, by the way, CTRL+H is a
toggle.

Apparently SP2 fouled this up.

I do not have SP2 so my View menu still shows: Show Replies to My Messages
Ctrl + H.

It doesn't matter whether Ctrl + H is on the menu or not it still works,
right?

I use Ctrl + H all the time, I'd be lost without it.

This is very strange, some people claim that it exists, while on my outlook
there is no such hotkey in
the help or listed in the interface menus.

I have XP SP2

It works, but its strange...

and THAT is why I didnt know about it... if it was apparent, I would know.

But, Ctrl + H still works right?

There are other undocumented things in XP. File and folder names are
missing in Thumbnail View for instance. You learn about them here in the
newsgroups, because if one person knows something and posts it, sooner or
later everyone will know it. ;-)

Similar to the Menu Bar and tabs missing from Task Manager. Something that
is usually done accidentally and then one wonders how to toggle it back to
the way it was.

File and folder names are missing in Thumbnail View.

This is a feature that allows for more thumbnails to be displayed on the
screen at one time.

If the file and folder names are not displayed in a folder that is set for
Thumbnail view. Right click that folder, hold down the Shift key and click
on Open. The file and folder names should now be displayed.

Conversely, you can right click a folder that is set for Thumbnail view,
hold down the Shift key and click on Open. If the file and folder names
were displayed, they won't be now.

You can also change this with an open folder that is set for Thumbnail view.
With the folder open, click View and change it to anything, except
Thumbnails. Now, hold down the Shift key, click View and click Thumbnails.
The file and folder names should now be displayed.

Conversely, with the folder open, click View and change it to anything,
except Thumbnails. Now, hold down the Shift key, click View and click
Thumbnails. File and folder names should not be displayed now.

On my machine in Full Screen view (F11) without Common Tasks or the Folders
pane showing, I can get six columns and five full rows to display without
the names. I can get six columns and four full rows to display with the
names. That is 30 thumbnails displayed without the names compared to 24
thumbnails displayed with the names. Depending on what you're doing, this
can have its advantages.

[[To turn off filenames, hold down the Shift key when you click to open a
folder in Windows Explorer or when you switch into thumbnail view. This will
turn of the file names, giving more space for the thumbnails. Doing it again
turns them back on.]]
