Best traditional PCI card...

Hi...

I just bought Call Of Duty 2 for PC and have found that my GeForce 4 MX
card doesn't support the game.

In hunting for a new card, I have found that my Sony Desktop Tower
(PCV-RZ14G) does not have the newer slots...PCI-Express or even AGP.
So, my question is this...

What is the best graphics card for me to get that will work with both
my computer and the game? It seems that I need 100% DirectX9
compatibility. I don't plan on running the game with the highest
graphics settings...like smoke and high AA.

In hunting around a bit, it seems that the ATI Radeon 9200 is PCI and
is supported by the game...as a bottom end. Is that it? I like my
NVidia board, but the game requires GeForce 4 or higher...and these all
seem to be AGP or PCI-e.

Help a new PC gamer out!

Thanks...

I would suggest that you buy a new PC that has PCI-E because graphic card
with PCI interface is double the price of AGP or PCI-E with performance
lower than either of them and it's not worthy. Plus, high grade graphic card
with PCI interface is rare.

However, if you insist of sticking with your current PC, get something of
the grade of 5700, as the price is still reasonable.

....it turns out I was wrong. I DO have an AGP 4x slot....

That should make finding something suitable much easier....

Most sales and user would suggest Inno GeForce6600 (not 6600GT) for AGP as
the price and performance is rather reasonable and balance at this level.
Plus, it goes with most of the games. If it does suit yours, the same thing
is what i am gonna say, "Get a new PC!" :p

6600GT is selling at Newegg for 109 I think after a modest rebate of
20 bucks.

The 6600 is about 10 bucks cheaper. Id rather get the GT for that
difference. There are cheaper versions about 20 bucks cheaper but they
are all PCI express.

If you can find a 6600 for 60 bucks or something I would think about
it but if you cant then for the 6600GT.

Heres just one test

Damn, if the difference over there is only 10 bucks , GET THE GT!!!

(I live in Hong Kong, and the difference in price is like US$100)

The 6600 gt and even the 7800s are really falling recently. There was
a clearance sale on the 6800s as low as 65 bucks after rebate in some
regions. Can you believe that ???? I would have bought one for that
price and actually checked eventhough I have two 9600s and a 7800gt.
I got my dual core X2 for 241 !

Someone just posted a evga 6600gt PCI express price of 99 after rebate
! I didnt think id see a sub 100 gt this fast.

I'd tend to think it's hardly worthwhile to only get a 6600,
a 6600GT is a better option. OP is looking to play modern
games and possible at least short-term future games will
make a plain 6600 hardly worth the effort.

I do agree though that the best longer term strategy might
be a new system, especially since one with only 4X AGP slot
may be slow from a CPU standpoint as well as video.

There are no PCI based video cards manufactured (which you require) that
will run a newer graphics intensive game like COD 2 very well. It
realistically requires at least an advanced AGP based card. If you want to
play newer games like this one, it's time to upgrade your computer, I'm
afraid.
