Best freeware firewall?

Even if I did digitally sign it proves nothing!

LOL, don't you know a joke when you see one? Granted no smilely, but I
was just answering in the same tone joking tone as you did.
Not all - as not all GnuPG users are here!

Yet another literal response to a joke.

I know it's useful and so
does any right minded thinking person(s) - no reason why it wouldn't -
anyone scanning you doesn't even know you're their - no reason to
attack someone if they not responding - it's that simple - honestly
:)

Any right minded thinking person will also realise it's not truly
'stealth' anyway since the lack of a response gives you away as much as
anything.

Not that it matters anyway.

Let me put it to you this way.

If we have some script kiddie running an automated port scan for
weaknesses, it doesn't matter if you are closed or stealth. He's not
looking for a specific target, he's looking for any target with a
specific weakness. If your port is closed and/or the weakness doesn't
exist he can't do a thing. He just goes on to the next target.

If we are talking about someone better who is for some reason targetting
you in particular maybe because he has a grudge against you or if he is
paid to do so, he certainly would not be fooled by the lack of response
(stealth) as mentioned before.

Why you think the worlds governments play a big thing on stealth!

Because in their case stealth really works? :)

I've been using Sygate Personal, which to the best of my knowledge is no
longer available anywhere. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

It has been pretty civilized and fairly powerful (although not perfect).
It handles very well, controls outbound traffic, and has integrated back
tracing. The only drawbacks that I've experienced is that the number of
rules are limited to 20, and that it fails the "tooleaky" test.

I just installed it on my son's computer. It's nagging me to register
it. Now, if the registration page has been taken down, I'll need to
figure out how to kill the nag in the registry, except that there's an
awful lot of cryptic Sygate stuff there.

Since this version is heading fast into vapor, I'm keeping my eyes open
about at least two new or recent firewalls to take Sygate's place. So,
although Sygate has served me well, it's temporary on the systems in my
house.

Last time I installed it, which was yesterday, Sygate Pro still accepted
my registration key and serial and seemed to connect to their site and
process it somehow, no problems. So if you've got a valid serial and
license for the Pro versoin, it should work. Although you can
apparently still register it offline by pressing Register Now and when
it fails/complains go to the Help screen and register now again.

The free version of Sygate should not bother you with any of that stuff.
It's still available here:

http://majorgeeks.com/Sygate_Personal_Firewall_Free_d3356.html

There are also many other firewalls besides Sygate, some free some paid.
Kerio has one although things are happening with them as well.
Outpost is another one. Many more free ones if you search. Good place
to look or find some is at Wilders:

Thanks, Kerodo.

I forgot to be more precise in my last post.
I'm not using Sygate pro, but the final free version that I downloaded a
couple of months or so ago. I put it on my son's "new" computer -- I'm
building its software complement. It's not on line yet, nowhere near a
hookup. And Sygate is nagging me to register with every bootup. All I
want to do is to kill that nag screen. I figure that if I can complete
the registration routine, that'll kill it...providing that Symantec
hasn't shut down the registration page for the _free_ version. Or I'll
have to go find the nag key in the registry and yank it out. This is a
little scary.

I want to continue using Sygate for the time being, but I do want to
replace it before too long. I figure by that time, why Comodo may be
ready for prime time (one can dream, no?)!

Meanwhile, yes: I'll take a look at Wilders.

Ok, I did not realize the free version had a nag screen. That's no
good. There must be a way around that, as you say.. But there are many
free ones available, so by all means have a look around.

The free version does have a nag screen that tells you to register. I
installed Sygate free on a new system yesterday. Even though when I tried
to register, I got "sygate.com cannot be found" the software thinks it was
registered and the nag screen went away.

Note to all: this is not nagware for a paid version, but rather, a nag
(reminder) screen to register the product. Of course, registration may
create an "existing business relationship," which will then allow
Symantec to spam users (something that Symantec seems rather good at).
I'll find out.

I'm using the basic free Symantec firewall on this Windows ME machine
right now, the same version that I put on my son's XP system, and this
one does not nag me. I must have registered it with Sygate.

A check box for upgrade is on the reminder window, but it's not
pre-checked. In other words, I would not classify Sygate Personal
Firewall as "nagware," since once it's registered, the nag screen is gone.

On the thread of the best firewall; this is a lot like asking
which is the best car. There are many freeware firewalls, and
some of them are every bit as good as Sygate.

ZoneAlarm still continues to be popular. But, I suggest you
check the webpages of www. majorgeeks.com and look over their
lists and evaluations for freeware firewalls. There are some
that seem nobody has heard of.

Well, I don't know if no one has heard of it, but I have been
using Outpost (free) for sometime, and it seems to be fine.
