Best firewall for 56k?

My cousin uninstalled the ZoneAlarm firewall that I put in for him months
ago claiming it was slowing down his gayOL connection. He now gets
constantly bombarded with popups and spyware. I have since moved onto
Sygate, but was wondering if anyone knew what the which firewall (ZA,
Sygate, Kerio, etc) would be best for a 56K? Thanks.

I don't think it matters whether one is on dial up or any other sort of
connection.

I would suggest Sygate over Kerio as a personal preference.

Then you need a pop up stopper.

Only your cousin can stop himself from installing spyware; you can point
him to adaware and spybot s+d to help him out after the event.

A browser that is not IE would be a good thing also.

I am using ZA and I think that is slowing a lot the connection...
When I go on net I don't use so much ZA because it drops me crazy...

Quite. ZA is horrible. Sygate and Kerio are much, much better in all
ways.

Then for pop-up and ad-blockers, use dedicated software for that.

Or use a browser with some popup blocking features, like Mozilla or
Opera. Then also have him install the free version of Winpatrol
<www.winpatrol.com>, to prevent anything being added to windows
startup/services without his OK, ditto for BHOs, and more.
Install decent AV-client, like www.free-av.com, immunize with
Spywareblaster <http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html>,
ditto with Spybot search & destroy
<http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html>. Latter also for use
as scanner, for finding and removing spyware/tracking-cookies etc.
Do regular scans with the Ewido Suite <http://www.ewido.net/en/>
and A2-scanner <http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/>
Browse <http://www.wilderssecurity.com/> for more....

All the best,
