best antivirus, antispyware and firewall

My PC came loaded with McAfee. My subscription expires soon, and I am
confused about what I should do. In reading other posts, it is apparent that
few people like McAfee. PLEASE tell me what I should use for antivirus,
antispyware and firewall. I realize that nothing is foolproof, but I want
the best I can get!

The best Windows Vista protection suite I have
used is Windows OneCare. Though not free, it
is very comprehensive in preventing malware from
entering into your system. You can try it free
for 90 days: http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/default.htm

Hello,

Check out my short list of utilities. It has many useful programs:

If a short list has many, how many does a long list have? :)

The best is Kaspersky but not free. Two free ones, AVG and Avast! are
good. I prefer Avast. Comodo is a great, free, firewall.

Well I'm one of the few that love McAfee. I've never had a virus problem on
any computer I have run it on. On the other hand, my desktop PC has remnants
of a Trojan on it (and is about to be reformatted) that OneCare allowed on.
It blocks the execution of the trojan, but cannot delete or quarantine it
and slows down the system tremendously.

I have also have virus problems in the past when running Norton and AVG.
Lesson learned - the only thing I use now is McAfee - which will also be on
the desktop following the reformat. I am currently using their Internet
Security Suite.

Whatever you decide to use though, make sure you keep it up to date. There
are too many people out there with nothing better to do than to write
viruses.

McAfee is offered free to Comcast customers. There must be tons installed.
I have it loaded on all my machines here and about 2 dozen good client
customer machines. No problems reported or noticed. I keep hearing bad
things about bad AV s/w but McAfee has been working solidly for years for
me. Keep it up to date. I shut it down during the SP1 update, turned it
back on and everything's great.

On the other hand, it seems ever since Peter left Norton has been going down
hill. I've had strange things happen, did all I could to find configuration
setting and finally removed Norton. (with there toll, If I don't have time).
I remove it everythime I come across one now, just on principle. I don't
have time to play with it anymore. And since the alternative works better,
I can look forward once again.

What software is needed to protect the computer?
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/default.mspx

Experts recommend running two or more anti spyware programs, since no single
one has a sufficient detection rate. Remember, you already have one in
Windows Defender. Vista also comes with a built in 2-way firewall that will
serve most home and small business needs just fine. In addition, enable your
router firewall if you have one. Most modern routers do, and a hardware fw
makes an excellent first line of defense.

Online do's and dont's:
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yourself/default.mspx

There are several good security programs on the market that will protect you
well and leave a small footprint as far as resources are concerned. Most
makers offer free trials, so test them out for yourself.

If you search through this ng you will find lots of threads on this subject,
read the advice. Kaspersky and Eset/NOD32 seems to be the flavour of the
day. Among the free solutions. AVG and Avast! are popular. For an additional
spyware program, concider Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, Spyware Doctor or
Superantispyware. Two very popular personal firewalls are Comodo and
ZoneAlarm. Comodo is freeware, ZA has a free version.

Good point...I also like the windows firewall and shut off the firewall
feature in McAfee. No bad experiences with McAfee, just like the Windows
version better.

You'll get nearly as many differing opinions as you will responses.

I'll start by saying that I don't think any security "suite" is a
good choice. It'd be better to use smaller, less-resource-draining
stand-alone products.

I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet
Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all without
any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that. But it's
been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee products. Their
quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they were acquired by
Network Associates.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton
Internet Security came up for renewal (at a cost substantially higher
than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less expensive
solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of GriSoft's AVG
(http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ). It proved to be easily
installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally, I was
pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable improvement in
my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec product. Another
free (for personal use) anti-virus product is AVAST! 4 Home Edition
(http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html), which is what I'm
currently using without problems on Vista Business.

For a recent comparison of anti-virus products:

Retrospective / ProActive Test
http://www.av-comparatives.org/

As for a firewall, Vista's built-in solution is more than adequate
for most consumers' needs. While it's not quite up to the ease-of-use
standards of Kerio or ZoneAlarm, it has been improved over WinXP's version.

There are two interfaces for Vistas built-in firewall:

1) A simplified one accessed through the Control Panel that is the only
one most people see. Sphinx's Vista Firewall Control
http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/) is a piece of freeware that makes the
Vista Firewall much more useful to the average user.

2) And the more advanced "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
(WF.msc), accessed via the Start Menu's Administrative Tools folder, for
the experienced user who wants more granular control.

If you prefer something a bit "chattier," Comodo Firewall Pro is
free for personal use.

To find and/or deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware"
and/or "spyware," two products that are quite effective (at finding and
removing this type of scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and
SpyBot Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free
versions. It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to
"immunize" your system against most future intrusions. I use both and
generally perform manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:
