Benchmarks for us old people?

Hey

I'm looking into buying a new laptop, and looking around, it seems
there's
been a lot of speed progress since my last big purchase, which was a
3.2
GHz P4 HT system awhile back. So, I'm suddenly thinking, maybe a new
laptop
with a Centrino Duo in it could actually outperform this old desktop
system?

But alas, all the benchmarks I can find on Google compare to other
processors that I don't have experience with. I was hoping there'd be
somewhere I could compare my old P4 with the new Centrino Duo... Is
that
hopeless, or does such a page exist? If you know of one, please let me
know

Download Sandra 2005 > http://www.sisoftware.net/
and install it on you desktop...in the benchmarks section it will run a
benchmark and it will allow you to compare you setup with other setup
from a long list....very nice program. And Free!

Frankly, a 3.2Ghz HT P4 is no dog at all, particularly if it is working
well and not overheating (the bane of the laptop P4). The quasi rule of
thumb is that the Mobile Pentium M at about 1/2 the P4's Ghz is
directionally equivalent. The Core Duo is maybe 20% faster than an
equivalent speed Pentium M. So... your 3.2Ghz P4 is directionally
equivalent to a 1.6Ghz Pentium M or a 1.3Ghz Core Duo (which does not
exist.)

Save your money for a couple of years. The Core Duo is still in its
shakedown period, the glow is coming off, and overheating problems are
being discussed as possible deal breakers.
