beginning dump of physical memory

H

HeyHoo

I have been getting this blue screen error with the
following message:

Address BFCEC2DC base at BFCB2000.
Datestamp 3e78e1f3 - smwdm.sys

beginning dump of physical memory.

In addition, after I updated the critial update and sp4,
my computer seems to reboot slower than before and it
hangs there when it tries to load norton antivirus and
internet security, can anyone explain what is going on?
thanks

HeyHoo.

It may be a sound card driver. Try removing the card and or rename the
driver found in;
%windir%\system32\drivers\smwdm.sys
to
%windir%\system32\drivers\smwdm.old
from the recovery console.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

I don't know if it is at all relevant, but I had something similar
with Win2000 (don't know what SP) and updates to the programme for
Norton Antivirus (not the virus definitions) - the same update worked
no problem on Win98SE. It was probably NAV2002 and there was no
problem as long as I didn't update the programme. Norton System Works
Pro 2003 is OK on the same computer.
The Symantec knowledge base might help
