No, you're the idiot who spends his free time making repetitive AND
worthless postings in newsgroups for a program he doesn't like.

Jay;

what is this envy you've got?

you're jealous because I've got balls to do high-end SQL work and
you're stuck writing stupid little spreadsheets?

there is hope for you--

I'm not USELESS i'm just the only one that gives a shit abotu the 100
million spreadsheet dorks that are taking it easy; copying and pasting.

it's not a way to run a company.

it's not a good way to have a growing career

You're in denial. You'll get through it.

....

But you don't care enough to show any of them, IN DETAIL, how much
easier and/or robust an Access or SQL Server solution would be. One is
left doubting whether you know anything other than how to rant. There's
little if any evidence to support your claims to vast knowledge and
expertise. And anyone (other than you) would think that if you really
did want to convince spreadsheet users to switch to databases, you'd
provide some DETAILED examples showing how much easier all sorts of
operations would be in databases. Your actions, however, support only
the conjecture that you just want to whine and rant.

Aaron,

True...you are not useless. I say that because useless is a value and
you have no value.

The only thing you ever mumble about is copying and pasting, since that
is al you apparently know how to do.

The rest of us '100 million spreadsheet dorks' are quite content to USE
EXCEL THE WAY IT WAS DESIGNED TO BE USED!!!!! Is your head such a
vaccuum that you can't get that????????

All I can say is that I hope you have a glass belly button. Why??
Because your head is so far up your butt, that that's the only way
you'll ever see anything!

i mean seriously

You are so right. I am jealous. Just the other day I inverted a
matrix and multiplied two matrices together to solve a simultaneous
equation problem.

Another time, I created a loan amotization schedule that allowed for
recapitalization of underpayment, excess principal paydown for
overpayment, and provided a way to change the effective interest rate
per period.

In every case, as I was banging my head against the desk, I lamented,
"woe is me" because I didn't have a SQL developer holding my hands.
The tasks were not too difficult in Excel, but just think of what could
be done if I used a DATABASE!!! (dramatic chord)

and for the record?

Are you wearing the juice?

right click NEW in windows explorer.. create a new 'Access Application'

open it up by double-clicking

right-click import your spreadsheets

presto-chango you excel dorks are obsolete

A

aaron.kempf

you don't use EXCEL AS ITS MEANT TO BE USED because

a) you use it for data entry
b) you can't normalize your data
c) you can't even enforce datatypes

the bottom line is that Excel wasn't DESIGNED to be used for ANYTHING.

it was designed to be a time-waster like Solitaire and Internet
Explorer.

Excel wasn't DESIGNED AT ALL-- it somehow evolved into the
spaghetti-code mess that it is today.

The root of the problem is that kids are taught Excel and they use it--
even though there are BETTER, EASIER tools on the market.

Excel is a DISEASE.

I SPIT on you lepers.

because you don't know any better?

Yeah, that works so well with spreadsheets that aren't just collections
of simple tables. No doubt it exemplifies your standard work product.

you don't use EXCEL AS ITS MEANT TO BE USED because

a) you use it for data entry

And there are never entry errors in any database forms?

If one knows what one's doing (so not you), it's fairly easy to catch
glaring entry errors in Excel using formulas alone (better using event
handlers, but not absolutely necessary). It's impossible to catch
subtle entry errors, e.g., 536.89 entered when it should have been
563.89, in any program, Access no differently than Excel.
b) you can't normalize your data

Normalization isn't necessary to USE data. Somehow scientific and
engineering software based on BLAS, LINPACK and EISPACK seems to manage
without normalized data structures. Why do you suppose that is?
c) you can't even enforce datatypes

On entry, not without VBA, but it's simple to trap entry errors when
referring to entry cells and propagate error values and display
diagnostic messages. It may not be as elegant as database can manage,
but it's possible without much effort. You just have to know what
you're doing, which is why you can't figure it out.
the bottom line is that Excel wasn't DESIGNED to be used for ANYTHING.
....

Well, nothing you could understand.
even though there are BETTER, EASIER tools on the market.

So show us WITH DETAILS how these other tools are easier. Without
details, your assertions are no more believable than me just stating
that Basque is an easier language to learn than Aramaic. Maybe it's
true, but why would anyone believe it without any substantial reasons
to do so?

most spreadsheets ARE simple tables.

of course you idiots mix subtotals into your DATA. lol.

Excel should be able to have FAKE ROWS in the middle.. so that you can
display subtotals... but when someone goes to import it; it doesn't
cause problems

Subtotals in tables are unwise, but subtotals in exhibits meant to be
printed are just what's expected from subtotals.

If you had a clue how to use Excel, you could figure out how to remove
the subtotals. It's not that difficult, but no doubt way outside your
competence.

You should always check source files before importing. Arbitrary text
files would be just as unpredictible.

Your problem is that database tables are the only data structure you're
comfortable using, so your wee brain can only conceive of other data as
tables. When they're not, you need your meds.

HARLAN

THESE SIMPLIFIED DATABASE TABLES THAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT?

They're MORE POWERFUL than your baby spreadsheets.

I have worked with Excel for years and years and years.

And then I woke up and realized that it's impossible to submit a query
against 400 different spreadsheets.. so i took some classes and found
some pride.

Excel is for babies.
