Before I Break my Wife's Canon 4200 !!!

J

John Thomas Smith

Well, the subject MAY be a bit over-done... but the CD/DVD tray I
ordered has arrived today, and I just want to find out if anyone
else who has the Canon Pixma 4200 (not similar... that model) has
followed instructions at http://pixma.web1000.com/IP4200/index.htm
and do those instructions work for the model 4200?

I'd sure hate to go through all those steps and then find out the
4200 is even slightly than any of the other models mentioned, and
I wind up with a printer that stops working for my wife!

Knightcralwer, the guy who maintains that site, conducted lots of
research on the subject and would not publish info on the ip4200 unless
there were successful attempts. While I don't have that model... I
know for a fact based on using store models that the procedure used to
extract the exact menupresses are indeed sound... and in fact the
procedure was writen based on some joker pressing resume too many times
and accidently discovering that the printer prints out documentation on
how how many resume presses does what. The most I've ever personaly
printed on the ip4200 was the test patern offered in the service menu
as the printer I used was not attached to a PC in any way what so ever.
While I personaly wasn't part of that project.. I did watch the
information get collected and form into the data you read.

Steve's forums was and still is the center ground for all research in
enabling cd-printing on canon models.

The "worst" that has ever happened was someone accidently set their
printer for "japan" and resulted in the printer complaining it had the
wrong cartridges and refused to print. The resolution was to re-do the
procedure listed and not screw up. This was early in the research
project, before knightcrawler's documentation, when no one knew jack
yet.

The ip4200 is different enough that a seperate page had to be writen on
the subject, it's not for example identical to the ip4000... but this
has been documented very well. Make sure you are reading
knightcrawlers page on the ip4200/ip5200/ip6600D and not the
ip3000/4000/5000/6000D/8500 nor the mp750/760/780

Thanks... went there and did a search... the ip4200 does work with
the instructions to enable the cd printing tray, so I'm going to
go ahead and do that and install the cd printing software from
Canon, then see how well it all works at the actual printing

Followed the directions at the top link, all worked 100% as stated

Found mention in stevesforums of a simple registry change that would
allow using the US printer driver that I'd already installed, and not
have to (re)install the European driver, so did that, and worked 100%

The last thing preventing CDr printing on the Pixma Series is a
registry key entry "CnmFSI_CDRSWITCH". If you have a non CDr support,
when installing the driver this value will be set to 0, where if you
install the driver with a printer's destination set to CDr support
this value will be one. When CnmFSI_CDRSWITCH = 1 there will be the
extra options to print onto Printable disc (recommended) and
"Printable disc (others)". Users who have installed this printer while
the destination was set to No CDr will have to run regedit

<start>[run]"regedit"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Print\Printers\Canon
PIXMA iPxxxx\PrinterDriverData and set value CnmFSI_CDRSWITCH=1

The actual path was \Canon iP4200\PrinterDriverData w/out PIXMA, but
otherwise information worked, changed value from 0 to 1 and exited

Also, somewhere along the way, found a PDF manual for the printing
software, think it was a link on stevesforums, so printed that to
have something to read while using the software

Installed the CD label printer software and set to creating a label

The ONE thing that was a bit of a concern (unfounded, as it turned
out) was the tray I bought off eBay is a B model and the template in
the software called for a C model... but the print was OK so that is
one thing I'll just chalk up to a minor software titling change

Wife was AMAZED at what **I** did for her (well... I did fess'up
about all the help from 'net groups <g>) and now sees all sorts of
possibilities for CD/DVD artwork

On the older pixmas Knightcrawler has the registry keys... keys users
like your self took the time to export... on the site to make that step
more simple. If your willing to take the time i'm sure he could use
the submission. There a link to his e-mail on the home page
http://pixma.webpal.info/

The difference is future users can download and run the registry keys
and not have to do a <start><run> regedit deal.

I don't know if he has these yet... and the ip4200 is using a different
driver revision so an example is required before publishing it.

The manual is likely out of Hong Kong... software probally from taiwan.
