Yeah, like the firewall vendors are afraid of Window XP's built-in
firewall. Or disk defrag tools are really worried about the crippled
defrag tool in Windows. Or anyone is worried about Movie Maker.

I think that if either one you knew what you were talking about you would
be dangerous. :)

There is nothing wrong with XP's built in FW. It's good as any host based
FW is in stopping unsolicited inbound traffic much like a NAT router. The
XP FW is a stateful proxy FW application.

If MS does put out an AV most likely with the help of a 3rd party vendor,
then it will be no worst than any of the other offerings out there. :)

Huh? What? Duane is there some reason you have to start every reply
with cheap shot?

Where exactly did I say there was? If you know what you're doing can
use XP's firewall and built in TCP/IP filtering to pretty well lock
down a machine.

Duane; did you bother to read the Reuters article or are you just
shooting from the lip again?

Microsoft's anti-virus product will be based on the technology they
acquired from GeCAD Software, the makers RAV about a year ago.

Why should I bother to read it? :)

That was a given that a 3rd party would be involved.

Be afraid be afraid of what?

That's seems to be shooting off. :)

Various exploits in the AV soft that have to be patched? :p

And if I know M$, they'll integrate it with their new OS flavor, so
sysads can spend their time again patching :)

Being forced to download an update each day, so that MS knows where you
currently are, and having to renew subscription, not on the AV, but on
the full Longhorn, because without renewed AV, Longhorn will refuse to
start, "not with an unsafe system, you see, we are applying the rules of
NGSCB"

What is the proper word for our German term "debt slavery"?

And let's not forget that, when microsoft enters an industry,
it usually (over a period of years) removes all competition.

Is anyone eager to see the day when microsoft av is the only
option?

Indenturement is one, of course IF your NOT willing to work I'm sure
they can import those who will a sort of seperating the wheat from the
chaffe routine, you see it happening all over Europe and I guess it's
great owing your life to foriegn interest ...

You know the amazing thing about any product, service or resourse is
that IF you and others do not use it (BOYCOTT) in an organized and for
a prolonged period of time something amazing happens, someone looses a
big market share and they either clean up thier act or go out of
business or move to another country to do business, another
interesting thing about boycotts and strikes is that IF they go on
long enough they can and will import someone to take your place at
work that IS of course IF your workplace is still standing ...

It's just a thought ...

I take it you've not tried WinXP SP2 RC2 then? Firewall vendors will be
VERY worried. It works similar to ZoneAlarm, Sygate insomuch that a
popup window comes up asking if you want to give a program permission
to access the net when it first runs and has options similar to Sy/Zone
in that respect.

Some competition never did any harm... as long as MS does not
incorporates it in their OS,... if they do.. that'll be one more new
(future) Penguin user...

Yeah, it's a big improvement on ICF, isn't it. Though it's inbound
connections, not outbound it intercepts:

Seems to me a new MSAV would be the least of issues in Longhorn or whatever
comes after it. Haven't heard that the 'Palladium' idea's been dropped or
that we won't be leasing software by then. I've got the Penguin installed
now, for that eventuality, by which time hopefully I'll have learnt it and
it'll be a serious contender.

does anyone seriously believe that will happen in this case?

this is not the first attempt they've made to enter the anti-virus
world... interested parties should research microsoft anti-virus
(msav)... then, as now, they leveraged technology made by someone
else... then, as now, they did not get the most well regarded
technology available... their previous attempt was a miserable flop...

some people might think the sky is falling, but i'm not going to hold

Regarding Jeffrey's original post, I interpreted his allusion to fear as
being afraid of the many ways that Microsoft could botch it up, not
that other developers of AV would have any real competition from
them to be afraid of. Given Microsoft's rather aggressive marketing
strategies, it could be a problem when they bundle it with the OS or
even integrate it with same. If they know what's good for them, they
will not try that approach again.

Bugger. Found the important bit below the table.

:)

I wonder if the updated IE/OE 6.0 (IE6.0sp2, I suppose) will find it's way
to the other OS'es.
