baud rate and parity question

How do I find out the baud rate and parity on my computer? We have a HP 450C
plotter that is having problems receiving multiple sheets. The plot file
sizes are in the range of 450 KB and the memory on the 450C is 16MB. If more
than 1 plot file is sent to the plotter at a time the plotter freezes. I
would like to check to see if the plotter is set to the proper baud and
parity setting. I am using Windows XP 2002 version.

You may not be asking the right question. The HP site specifies the
following drivers available for the 450C: "Windows 3.x, Windows 9x,
Windows NT, and ADI." WinXP is not included in the list although that
may be an error. The interface is listed as: "Parallel, RS-232 optional."

Are you using the latest drivers? Are they really for WinXP? Which port
are you using on the printer?

The optional RS-232 port would have baud rate settings but the standard
parallel does not use that method.

In any case, you say the plotter works just fine with single documents.
Therefore, the plotter and computer are communicating so the I/O format
and cable must be OK. Most likely the driver or software settings need
revision. The latest WinXP driver is 4.65 dated 8 Mar 2004.

===============================
Printer port settings can be found at Start\Settings\Printers and Faxes.
Right click on your printer and select Properties and click on the
Ports panel. At this location you can select the port for your plotter
and configure it at the computer end.

If you have lost the owners manual for the 450C you can download a .pdf
file from HP. You ought to be using the parallel port (faster) in which
case the only 450C setting that might be relevant is the I/O timeout.
Default seems to be 30 min.

I am assuming your HP plotter is connect through a serial port. 'Baud rate'
began to be used in the 1920s for signal changes per second, and is
different from 'bit rate', the term used for computer communication. Your
problem is not incorrect parity because then the plotter would generate NO
valid output. Your problem cannot be incorrect bit rate because the results
of that would be either very slow transmission of the image file or errors
in the plotter output.

You should contact HP customer support for help in finding out what the real
problem is.
