Battery recharging problem

My laptop battery will not recharge when it is plugged in anymore. The
computer runs fine while plugged in, but the battery indicator in the tray
reads, "n% available (plugged in; not charging)". How do I make it charge
again?

Did you ever get a answer to this question? I just purchased a new computer
and the same thing is happening. It's not even a month old.

Thank you ahead of time for your reply.

Looks like you have either a bad battery of a circuit fault. There's not
much you can do software option wise to cause this to happen. You do have a
backup battery, don't you. I always keep one around. It's particularly
useful traveling when I find I can't get to a power outlet (read forget).
You can pick one up cheaply on e-bay.

In my experience with a Fujitsu laptop running Vista Business, the battery
must be at less than 90% before it will start charging. I assume that this
is to maximize the number of recharging cycles.

No, I never got an answer, but it got more comlicated. I found that I had
this problem with one of my power cords and not the other. Obviously, this
implies a problem with the power adapters that have been shipped to us more
so than a Windows problem. But after two months, the second power cord is
defective as well. I need to contact Dell about this, I think.

I have discovered this problem must actually be in the power adapters, not
the software or the battery. My battery will charge from some power cords and
not others. I need to contact Dell about this sometime this week.

Roxie,
You want to make sure the green light on your power supply (charger) is on
when you plug in your charger. Otherwise it is for sure not being charged.
Also, you might notice that the light may take a few seconds to go out after
you removed the plug. So, make sure you have a good solid green when you
assume the cable to be good. Also make sure the connection between the power
cable and charger is solid. Some people don't push the plug in enough and
this makes for a loose intermittent connection.

I have the same problem as Lhynard as I have only owned my new laptop for a
few days. I just recently upgraded to vista ultimate from vista home premium
and that is when i noticed that my battery would not charge anymore. Any
other solutions? I might try to drain my battery and see how that works but
i would rather wait until I can get some other alternative.

I have the same problem and was wondering if there are any alternative fixes.

Do all of us with this problem have Dell's? Because I think it might be an
issue with the power adapter.

Acutally it isnt a dell but an Asus m51sr so i dont think its because of my
adapter, sorry for not making that clear before hand.

I have to adapters. One stopped working before the other, which is why I
think it might be their fault. But the light is on both of them, and they
deliver power to my laptop; they just will not recharge it. My battery is
completely dead now. I have to use one of the cords.

If they are powering your laptop then these are ok. The problem looks like
you have a bad battery or the charging circuitry is at fault. You might try
another battery. Try charging your battery in another laptop if you have
access to one. If the problem is circuitry, you might have to bring it into
a service center. There are no customer serviceable part for this. If you
bring your computer in, the service shop can tell if you have a bad battery
or not. There are no configuration options that would make battery charging
behave this way. It's all hardware. There is a button on the battery you
can push to tell the health of the battery. When you push it you should see
all the lights be green. Since yours is discharged, some or most may be out
when the buton is pushed. This would be normal for a discharged battery.
Any other color would indicate a bad battery.
