BartWare Personal Firewall 3.0.2

BartWare

Hello everyone!

I've been working for a while on a new version of my firewall, and I've
combined the features people liked from version 1 (for Win9x) and 2
(WinXP). I've mainly designed this firewall to manage outgoing
connections.

Note: this firewall is only compatible with Windows XP (or any other
NT5 platform such as Win2k and Win2k3)

Download link:
http://rapidshare.de/files/27906693/BWPF302b-setup.exe.html

Any feedback is appreciated. Please also read the notes before
installing (after accepting the disclaimer in the installation it'll
give some general information).

I see that if you uncompress this it can work as a stand-alone or portable
firewall.

If this is truly the case here is a small nitch you may take advantange of
to
make your product known. Make a portable version, in a zip file and post it
on
sites that have portable applications.

I can promote it for you too when I get some things I am working on
together...

Some people (including me) are looking out for portable apps, and a firewall
does not exist yet.

A free tip from a friend....

This would indeed work as a portable application. Thanks for the tip
:)
I guess you could even run it from a memory stick.

For version 3.0.3 I'll provide a .ZIP aswell, so you can just unzip it
anywhere and run it directly. If you'd put it on a USB stick, it'd
remember your rules anyway.

Thanks again.

there was someone here who was looking for a portable firewall...

There is a site that has portable apps..

www.portableapps.com that has lots of traffic perhaps they would post it
there among the other applications.

I could say a lot about why portable apps have a great future.... but
another time perhaps.. in another place....

As I said my offer stands. I can post a link to your app from my sites,

or help you with other things.

Good luck with that firewall. It indeed looks promising...

A few more small requests/suggestions...

1. Allow one to sort the application list by different fields (EXE Name,
Full Path, Status). I'm always cleaning up my firewall (Kerio 2.1.4) to get
rid of "allowed" setup applications in my "Downloads" folder. If I could
sort the list by "Full Path", then I can highlight all the apps in the
"Downloads" folder and remove them.

2. Change the SysTray icon when the Firewall protection services are
Paused... this way one can see that it's disabled and enable it.

3. Add Start & Stop Firewall protection services to the SysTray menu

Thanks!

Thank you very much for the feedback!

A tip for you, Kendall, just click 'Allow once' and the rule will be
deleted next time you restart your PC. Thanks for the tip though and
I'll be adding that in 3.0.3. The systray icon is a great idea, I'll be
adding that aswell. :) (and the additional options in the systray
menu).

Zepos: I'm working on a website at the moment but I can post details
here:
detailed TCP/UDP/ICMP/IP statistics
an easily accessible list of connections
the ability to terminate connections or the applications related to
it
4 security levels: allow all, normal (ask most), high (deny most) and
block all.
easy GUI to change connection rules (remote port, remote host, local
port, etc.)
easy GUI to change application rules
an easy update system (no reboots)
online help files and support forum
easy DHCP releasing/renewing
logging

You can see all screenshots here:
http://www.newagegangsters.org/BWPF3scr/BWPF3-Screenshots.zip
(I removed the forwarding option in the layout, this is a screenshot of
3.0.1, may add it later if people are interested, it'd basically allow
you to forward TCP connections, but Windows can do this anyway)

So, a summary of what I'll be adding in 3.0.3:
- improved logging, more information
- systray icon will be changed when firewall is paused
- systray menu will have an option to pause/resume
- the application rules list can be sorted by .EXE, etc
- a portable version will be added
- a WEBSITE will be there with online help ;)
Possibly a support forum aswell if the interest is there.

Where can one download the version that works on Win98SE? I tried
Googling for it and every link that I found takes to one here:

I've spoken with Bart and until his site is online, older versions can be
downloaded via the archive at the URL below.

1.4.3 is apparently the last version that supports 9x.

Hi Bart

Been a while since anyone has suggested a firewall here (alternative to
sygate, zonealarm, kerio etc etc)

Question: I am just a simple end user and have no idea about firewalls or
any intention of learnign about them and obviously need my pc to be blocked
from any hackers (if thats the right word). is ur firewall a good option or
do i need to understand all about them before installing? why would i
chooses your firewall over the others? don't take that the wrong way but is
it a good alternative to those others and is it eay to setup?

thanks Bart.

sorry Bart. just re-read that and there are so may spelling mistakes. been
drinkin and didn't check ( ... sorry

That's fine ;) And no, you don't need to know anything about firewalls,
really, though some basic computer knowledge could come in handy.
Installation is easy, just download it, run it and click next ;) It's
quite easy to use (or at least I aim to make it as easy as possible).

Basically if you don't change any of the settings, the program will
only ask you to allow or disallow programs access to the internet.

Then on to the next question: why would this firewall be better than
others? Well, as of my knowledge, Kerio has been sold to Sunbelt
Software, and Sygate was sold to Symantec, meaning they won't stay
freeware (infact, are they at all anymore?). Anyhow, this means you
can't get free updates, and that security flaws in any of the software
won't be fixed for you. BWPF will stay freeware. I do believe ZoneAlarm
will keep a freeware version, but that is such a pain to update that I
think most users will just turn updates off. With BWPF it takes only a
few seconds to update, and you don't have to do anything. The
protection is, I think quite similar to others. Also ZoneAlarm just
refuses to remember my settings properly, which is infact the reason I
made this program.

Hope this clarifies your questions :)
