balloon tips

Hi,

Back in the days when I used XP there was a registry altering utility called
xp_balloontips.vbs. Running this useful utility managed to get rid of most
of XP's annoying balloon tips that come up on mouse rollover.

Does anyone know if there is anything similar for Vista?

Press Windows+R, enter gpedit.msc and hit enter. This opens the Group Policy
Editor.
Go to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Start Menu and Taskbar.
Select Remove Balloon Tips, right-click it and choose properties from the
context menu
Select Enable from the options and click ok
Close the Group Policy Editor
Reboot Windows Vista

gpedit.msc is not available in Windows Vista Home and Home Premium, so use
the Registry

Press Windows+R, type regedit and hit enter. This starts the registry editor
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER / SOFTWARE / Microsoft / Windows /
CurrentVersion / Explorer / Advanced
Create a new Dword and name it EnableBalloonTips
The value should be automatically set to 0, if it is not change it to 0
Reboot Windows Vista

A very big thank you to Darkrat and Brink for their help. I now have this
sorted!

As a postscript, it does beg the question why gpedit.msc is not available on
home and home premium! Does Microsoft assume that anyone who settles for a
lower grade OS will automatically be too stupid to know how to use something
as complicated as gpedit.msc? Very annoying - as I had access to gpedit.msc
on my XP machine.

Ah, but was it the Home edition? The bigger problem is that manufacturers
don't give you the option of selecting an OS version at purchase. And most,
because of profit concerns, install the cheaper Home editions.

service packs removed the word "professional" from the opening splash
screen.

Aside from that - yes, if I were a retailer, I'd want to choose the cheapest
options available to me so that I can keep the cost per unit down. That
begs the question why Microsoft would wish to put out an inferior version of
its latest OS as the bog standard to consumers - many of whom will have been
seasoned XP users. This very same ethos affected me when I upgraded from
win95 to XP. In win95 I had been able to install the IIS server as part of
a package called Visual InterDev - however my new XP Home OS was having none
of that so I had to fork out nearly 100 pounds sterling (200 dollars then)
to get XP Pro with its IIS. I was very annoyed. Little wonder why Mr Gates
left with a good pension.

Apologies to Vista users for my rant - but it's all tied in really.

Don't know but one thing that you should be aware of is that condoms have a reservoir tip.
They could be called balloon tips but it's the same thing.

Not sure if that is true for Vista.
