bad idea in Vista

I used to be able to group and display files in folders according to first
letter, but now grouping them is done by "range" (A-H for instance), and has
negated that usefulness. Now I have to look through dozens or tens of dozens
of files grouped together instead of just the few files starting with B, for
example.

A gigantic step backward.

And since Vista Search doesn't display all files by the same name (shows
Picture1.jpg and not Picture.jpg sitting right next to it, for example),
it's only made it that much more difficult.

You can press J to highlight the first entry beginning with J for example,
and then go through each successive one.

And since Vista Search doesn't display all files by the same name (shows
Picture1.jpg and not Picture.jpg sitting right next to it, for example),
it's only made it that much more difficult.

Perhaps you haven't given it time to build the index yet.

I've had this same problem, even though the indexing should be well done on
this folder. It's been there since Janurary and computers pretty much been
running 24/7 since then. It may be a bug in the search feature. But, it's
not too bad for me yet. Except for one time all the items came up except
one, and it was an important one, and I was freaking out looking for it. It
was in the same folder with a name that should have been found...

Thanks for the tip. I'll use it.

I've had Vista on my puter since it was released, so the time thing for
indexing doesn't seem to apply here.

Yeah, that's how I find 'em too. Just manually look through the folder with
the related name file Vista did find.

Windows Desktop Search found 'em on XP, so you'd think that Vista would be
at least as accurate. Oh well.

I think I know why. You have to go to start menu settings in control panel
and have it search the whole index instead of just the user's files. Before
that, files which were clearly in the index didn't show up when searching.

What program are you using to browse your folders and files with? Are
you using Windows Explorer or which sounds to me like your using
Windows photo gallery.

Windows Explorer still sorts by file name (alphabitical Order) if you
choose
